6. She was 18. And simply walked out of the Target store in
broad daylight.

How can you protect your kids against something like this. And it happened in one of the safest cities in the US.

26. it was 7 or 8 PM
not totally broad daylight, but not the middle of the night either. I cannot think of the KC metro area as being 'one of the safest'. Those exurbs are part of that metro area whether they realize it or not. But even in much smaller Mason City, Iowa a television newsanchor disappeared, and a number of young women were raped and murdered in rural Wisconsin in the late 1980s. There is no place totally safe.

I hope the murderer gets caught quickly, but it took a couple of years for Ally Kemp's murderer to get caught, and so many others do not get caught.

14. This is one of the few reasons I support the death penalty.
I don't think it should be used often and I want absolute proof via DNA, but, in these cases, I support it.

I bet she was sexually assaulted before she was killed, too.

Sounds eerie like that husband and wife killing team from Canada Paul somebody and Karla Homolka.

15. Didn't know, hadn't heard local news today. This is so bad. Had hoped she would be found alive.
Her parents were surely trying to live with that hope, according to what they said on the news last night. They were reminding themselves she was a very "tough" little girl, as if they held out hope she could fight hard enough to get away.

Maybe it's really not safe anymore for anyone to go anywhere alone. People in large places with absolutely no connection to others, no familiarity with passersby, no personal reputation to maintain with the people around them may find it easier to believe they are invisible when they decide they can abduct teenagers, or children in broad daylight.

17. Oh Man !
I was really hoping she would be found alive and well . We really live in a world of horrific freaks and they call us safe . I hoped the cell phone she had would find her ok and soon even though you always deep down expect the worst these days .

I just can't imagine that no one saw this and tried to help her in daylight yet with cameras .

Reports: Body Found in Missouri Search

~snip~
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (AP) - A young, goateed man videotaped leaving a Target store moments before the apparent abduction of an 18-year-old woman from the adjoining parking lot is being sought for questioning, investigators said.

The man had not been identified and was not being called a suspect, but he might have information about the disappearance of Kelsey Smith, Overland Park Police Chief John Douglas said.

Kelsey's parents, Greg and Missy Smith, said Wednesday on "The Early Show" that they do not know the man in the surveillance video.

"None of our immediate family recognize him," Greg Smith told CBS.

Police on Tuesday released surveillance video showing an older-model Chevrolet pickup truck that they believe was involved in the teen's disappearance Saturday. They earlier released video showing a woman they believe is Smith being forced into her car.

Just before 7 p.m. Saturday, the 1970s-model pickup pulled into the parking lot aisle where Smith had parked about one minute earlier, police said. A man is seen leaving the pickup and going into the Target store Smith had entered.

28. This was a Very Shocking and Sad Story, Played Out Live on TV
This was a very sad and shocking end. I had just been hearing, during the afternoon, a discussion on MSNBC with the criminal profiler Cliff van Zandt, talking about what a bad sign it was that the signals from the cell phone location led to this secluded, wooded area, that this was not good, I turned the TV off for a little while, and when I turned it back on, late afternoon or early evening or whatever it was, the first thing I heard on CNN Headline News channel, was that they had found a dead body in these same woods. Horrible; very, very sad. She never stood a chance. It was all so sudden, after people were hoping that it might be all right.

It was almost like we all experienced the event from a distance, because of the mall surveillance cameras: the teen girl coming out of the store, the suspect male having walked out just before her, the horrific long-range parking lot shot, showing the attacker running up to her car as she was going to put her purchases in the car, and violently shoving her in, then jumping in and driving off with her, in her car, the murderer at the wheel. Then the pictures of the car driving out of the area. Her family and others, pleading for her return, with picture t-shirts, searches. Then suddenly--this dismal horror. She is dead; kidnapped, raped, so afraid, murdered.

Then, to top it all off, you have to suffer the miserable, disgusting outrage of coming here to DU, and reading "Jerry Falwell"-like spitting hate on thread after thread of evil, frigid-hearted "liberals" pissed off that raped, lynched white women were paid attention to, after they were dead (not this thread). What a sad, horrible life it sometimes is.
