Bush said to one Peoria diner: "Glad you're here"
Edited on Thu Feb-01-07 04:10 PM by sabra
ChicagoTrib has a little more to this interesting story... :-)

http://newsblogs.chicagotribune.com/news_theswamp/2007/01/bush_playing_in.html#more

<snip>

The president's appearance at the restaurant prompted a reaction of calm curiousity. No one got up from the tables or the counter to greet him. Rather, Bush spoke briefly with some diners, was shown a child's table-side crayon drawing and appeared to sign an autograph. "Glad you're here," the president said to one diner.

Weishaar, 71, sitting at the counter drinking coffee and smoking one cigarette after another, called the president’s visit “a big surprise.’’

So are the welcome prices at Sterling, where the Number One special is one pancake, one egg, bacon or sausage for $3.95, and the Valentine's Day special is $24 for two (with a 7 oz. ribeye, shrimp, strawberry shortcake, dinner rolls, soup or salad).

“The congressman told me that, when I came back to Peoria, I'd find a community that's vibrant and strong and optimistic, and people around this table are vibrant and strong and optimistic,’’ the president said en route to the plant, “and I can't thank you enough for sharing your concerns, talking about your hopes, and I can't thank you enough for working hard to really make America the great country that it is.’’

edit: Did he sign his autograph on a library book?

14. You're right - it is a library book - what an idiot
You can clearly see the card pocket on the inside cover.

Unless maybe Bush just had an artistic inspiration and whipped out his crayolas for a little coloring.

22. Not if you look clearly
He is signing the gold slip. Presumably he opened the book because the cover is probably glazed fabric, like many library books.

He's an idiot, granted, but let's call him on genuine idiocy. Goodness knows, there is enough that we don't need to make stuff up. :hi:

You think the gold area is a separate piece of paper?

If so, then I agree. There's certainly enough GENIUNE asshattery
that he's responsible for.

25. It looks like a separate piece of paper, yes
Possibly a napkin. Actually, it looks like the hall passes we had when I was in grade school. Maybe the little kid had been coloring on it when * snatched it to sign as a photo-op; that would explain why the child looks ready to cry.

28. It looks like something glued inside the book
Its border is aligned with the page of the book. It probably would move around as Bush put pressure on it if it wasn't attached and Bush would be holding it. Bush is also holding the book at an incline and a separate piece of paper would have fallen to the floor unless it was attached. And it's inside the book; if it were a separate napkin or piece of paper, Bush would not have opened the book but would have used the harder book cover. At least that's what my own observations tell me.

34. Agree
This is not a separate piece of paper, but has to be glued or he would be holding it steady. Plus why would he open the book and put it there to sign? No way. This is a library book.

and never open them up to use the back inside cover. No, I don't sign a lot of autographs, only on things I don't wish to, like checks.
