Tropical Storm Barbara forms off western Mexico, expected to become season's first hurricane

MEXICO CITY — Tropical Storm Barbara formed off the southwestern coast of Mexico on Wednesday and could strengthen to a hurricane over the next several days, forecasters predicted.

Barbara had winds of about 54 miles per hour and was centered about 200 miles south-southwest of the coastal town of Puerto Angel, Oaxaca, Mexico's National Meteorological Service reported.

A preventative alert was issued for the coasts of Oaxaca and neighboring Guerrero state, the service said.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center estimated the wind speeds as somewhat lower, at around 44 mph, but predicted Barbara could reach hurricane strength by Saturday and move near to the Mexican coast west of Puerto Angel by Monday.

By late Wednesday, the storm was moving roughly south at about 5 mph, but could make a sharp turn northward toward the coast, the hurricane center said.
