ALWAYS been a Democrat!

I'm rather tired of 'the South' comments!

Is asking 'are they a woman' legitimate? I don't understand.

19. I always defend the South, but in this instance, I think it was a
legitimate question.

I know tons of Fred Thompson Democrats. Of course, I'm in Tennessee.

:hi: What part of the South are you from?

25. My husband lived in California for years and can't understand
why I've never had any desire to move there. I think it's a Southern thing. LOL. (Hubby's from Boston).

Now, Louisiana? I'd move there. :)

20. I didn't hear him, but he might really have been.
Southern Democrats, by and large (and certainly not all of them) are far more conservative than their Northern and west-coast counterparts.

Of course, I'm not saying the caller wasn't a Republican ringer. I'm just pointing out that Thompson, unfortunately, has many Democratic friends in the South and mid-West. That will be a BIG, BIG problem for us in the general election.

26. I just read it and don't necessarily agree.
I do agree that most any Dem is better than most any Repub - but I don't believe a lot of people think that, particularly not swing voters who will be less influenced by policy and more influenced by character (and I don't mean "moral," in this case. I mean "acting a part.")

Thompson is that "Daddy" character a lot of Republicans and swing voters feel they need. :(

28. So try this on; the majority of Americans are against this war;
Thompson isn't. That will probably be a big tipping point with many.
I just don't see him as much of a threat; I don't see any rethugs that way.
But I guess we shall see; I may be eating my words, but I hope not!

35. What???
"Southern Democrats, by and large (and certainly not all of them) are far more conservative than their Northern and west-coast counterparts."

That talking point is completely untrue. I'm around Southern Democrats of all types and they are every bit as liberal as any other Democrat in the country.

39. Here in east TN, our Dems are about 50% conservative and 50% moderate/liberal
Of course, that's not a scientific sampling, just my perception. The long-time residents, families going back several generations, seem to be the most conservative. The only liberals I know here are from somewhere else originally.

Again, this is not a scientific sample, just my perception after being involved in local Democratic politics for almost 8 years.

8. No true Democrat with any intelligence or self respect would be for Thompson.
Why would they? There are so many outstanding candidates in the Democratic Party running, why would they need to seek a Republican?

With all the other lies and distortions the GOP throws at us, does anyone believe for a second that they wouldn't hesitate to hire people to tell lies and attempt to influence public opinion by pretending to be something they're not?

We see it here on DU all the time. I don't believe for a second that was a Democrat calling on WJ.

24. There is only one definition of a Democrat that's truly valid:
Namely, simple party registration papers. Of course, I'm referring to people like Joe Lieberman but also so-called "Reagan Democrats" from the 1980s. You might not think they're Democrats, but their registration papers say otherwise.

Call it the cynical definition of a Democrat.

27. Um... some of us are intelligent Democrats on this board and
we're not so certain that there are a big crop of "outstanding" Democrats running. Sorry, I don't think so. I can't even seem to choose a primary candidate because of it. None of them "tickle my fancy," so to speak.

That's not to say the Republicans have "outstanding" people running, either. They don't. Their field is lackluster and boring, as well.

I, for one, am still searching for some Moose Tracks amongst all this vanilla. :)

All and all, I think the choices this year, on both sides, are pretty lacking for anyone who wants to put an end to corporate influence in politics, "populist" rhetoric be damned.

42. The only way we will ever get anyone who can truly perform miracles is to get rid
of all the private campaign money. It must become a public function, so everyone has the opportunity to get their message out. Average Joe or Average Mary will never make it, because they lack the ability to raise the millions necessary to compete with the others.

I think all of the Dem candidates are outstanding compared to the Republican candidates. Are they the best candidates for the job? No. But until we reform the process, we will never get the best, because the odds are so stacked against that.

Dems should take him more seriously. I just heard Cynthia McKinny might run as a Green, so combine Nader and Reagan and you end up with President Fred.

38. Yet none will say WHY they're hot for Thompson
because they don't know why. They don't know where he stands. We're getting "he's strong!" Really? Because of his tough guy movie/TV persona? Republicans seem to be emotional voters. They're not issue voters as much as American Idol image voters. Bush was the "guy you want to have a drink with". Issues/Schmissues.
Scharzenegger. Reagan. Thompson. It's not what they stand for. It's how they appear. And that to this morning's CSPAN callers is "presidential".
Talk radio feeds this emotional fervor. It's not the why. It's the crush they have on the new guy. He's dreamy.
