My thoughts on the speech
Edited on Wed Jun-16-10 09:18 AM by berni_mccoy
He covered all the bases and there was a great deal of detail in it for a 20-minute Oval Office address.

A couple of big points: He did establish the equivalent of a TVA for the Gulf Coast, led by the Secretary of the Navy. He also is personally involved in setting up the escrow account for BP to pay damages. I believe he will be effective in getting results on this.

He also announced a larger push to move off of fossil fuel and called for all Americans to do their part.

Big Ed agrees with my. I've put up a point-by-point analysis in my journal.

1. Yesterday came the broad outline
Today and moving forward specifics behind the scenes, possibly even with a few bodies under the bus.

2. I'm listening to the actual speech now
As soon as it happened, the government put scientists together. Immediately.

And it is the largest spill in history so far? I think that's what I got. It is the largest cleanup effort in history.

30,000 people working on it. Plus National Guard. Really to read DU you'd think none of this happened. Maybe they just don't know? A lot of it is knee jerk.

Constructing barrier islands is something I've never heard of before. Of course it won't be perfect and new shit arises to deal with - yeah, that's life, except for pundits and others who do nothing but criticize based on their ignorance.

What sucks is the damage to the economy - we really didn't need that.

Well I hope I'm not tested, but I see no point in being so angry. What good does that do? And not at the people who caused it, but at the government.

Establishing a commission to figure out what to do is practical but of course will be met with derision - why study a thing and try to do something that will work when we can impulsively just punish people and feel better, even if more spills occur in the future because we reacted thoughtlessly? :sarcasm:

Amen. the failed philosophy of non-regulation - the libertarians and free marketers, for whom this just happens and lawsuits are the only remedy.

3. I think you came back at the wrong time, Berni.
Because frankly, this bullshit going on in GD and GDP right now makes me want to leave.
