Tom Clark investigates whether Obama campaign aides told the Canadian government that his private NAFTA position is the opposite of what he told us during the Debate.

3. Debunked. Thoroughly. All over DU and elsewhere today.
In a statement, the Canadian Embassy disputed the television story.

"The Canadian Embassy confirms that at no time has any member of a presidential campaign called the Canadian Ambassador or any official at the Embassy to discuss NAFTA. Last night, the Canadian television network CTV falsely reported that such calls had been made. That story is untrue. Neither before nor since the Ohio debate has any presidential campaign called Ambassador Wilson or the embassy to raise NAFTA."

On his campaign plane, Obama said: "It wasn't true."

His campaign also denied the CTV report.

"When Senator Obama says that he will forcefully act to make NAFTA a better deal for American workers, he means it," said Obama spokesman Bill Burton. "Both Canada and Mexico should know that, as president, Barack Obama will do what it takes to create and protect American jobs and strengthen the American economy — that includes amending NAFTA to include labor and environmental standards."

Now we can safely assume that the CTV story is true. I hope all Obama supporters take notice, before it is too late.

19. Actually...
I've been around since 2004--I just haven't felt like posting much. I try to maintain a life between elections.

And clever acronyms aside, this is at least the sixth place someone has posted that story, and the fourth since the Canadian embassy--who doesn't exactly have a dog in this fight--said it's not true, around noon today.

I suspect everyone is being played, just like they were by Drudge earlier this week.

27. Yeah well here's another newbie...
..calling this spam bullshit. How many Hillbots took the time out to try one more time to make something stick to Obama? You guys just won't freaking give up beating the horse, even hours after it's dead and there were already a few comments calling it horseshit.

Way to play the newbie card..."oooh, your opinion doesn't mean shit because you haven't bothered post a thousand times." Yeah, that's not childish at all.

18. Why didn't the OP also put CLINTON in the title next to Obama?
Oh, because it was an attack on Obama. CTV also reported in this same story that someone from the Clinton campaign contacted the Canadian government saying the same thing as the Obama campaign was said to have done. lol

In the future, when attacking you're competition, make sure who you support isn't being accused of the same thing in the same story. LMAO

24. I give this story a big "so what?"
Canadian and Mexican workers hate NAFTA as much or more than American workers, because the US ignores every trade ruling that has gone against it. Their workers are screwed by NAFTA as much as ours, because NAFTA was intended to make it easier for multinational corporations to shift countries and avoid duties, not to improve the lives of workers. If Obama and Clinton want to revise NAFTA, they'll have a lot of support over the borders, too.

30. CTV stands by Obama story and names Obama aide who called re: NAFTA
by ruggerson

http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/0208/Talking_to_Canada.html

CTV stood by, but tweaked, its story yesterday, suggesting that an Obama aide had spoken not to the Ambassador but to the Consul in Chicago, and naming the aide, economist Austan Goolsbee.

Both Obama's campaign and the Canadian government continued to deny the substance of the conversation -- the notion that Goolsbee was suggesting that Obama's tough talk on Nafta wasn't entirely heartfelt.

But their blanket denials yesterday seem to have been based on the relative technicality that the conversation was with the Consul, not the Ambassador. I updated my post on the subject yesterday to include this quote from the embassy spokeman, Tristan Landry:

"Canada has diplomatic representatives posted in the US, including Chicago. These representatives are actively talking to decision makers, including those involved in all campaigns, about the whole range of Canada-U.S. issues. Our economic relationship and trade often come up in these meetings but in none of our conversations has any campaign adviser ever signaled that a candidate would say things that they didn't mean or that we should disregard," he said.

ABC is on this as well:

"ABC News' Jennifer Parker spoke to Goolsbee, a University of Chicago economics professor, Thursday who would not confirm or deny that he had a conversation with Georges Rioux, the Canadian Consulate General in Chicago. Rioux, in meetings this week in Ottawa, would also neither confirm nor deny any conversation took place. Both men did say that they know each other.
