Standard operating procedure: claim that all tragic accidents or murderous events in which people die in America are a result of the fact that, in its evil, America does not put homosexuals to death as they deserve to be put to death.

In the eyes of the Phelpses, this refusal of America to exert the death penalty on homosexuality is the direct cause of all deaths in America, especially prominent, attention-getting ones, whether 9/11, a bus accident or a schoolhouse shooting rampage. And, of course, it's also the reason soldiers die in Iraq, which is why they picket the funerals of servicemen and women.

Their official stance is that they not only take joy and delight in, but actively pray for more of, deaths such of these. If you have ever asked yourself "Who could possibly be in favor of a terrible car accident that kills a mother of five?" or "Who could possibly be in favor of a mine collapse that kills miners?" or "Who could possibly be in favor of a 19-year-old getting blown up by a roadside bomb in Baghdad?," well, now you know: the Family Phelps. They have actually convinced themselves that all such events are God's punishment on America for not hating gay people enough to kill them all.
