2. Stolz misses the point. "No strategy to win"...win what?
The only win was supposed to be political reconciliation so Sunnis and Shiites and Kurds could live and govern together. Military can't win that for them.

Besides the splurge isn't what brought the violence down. It was Al Sadr calling off the Shiite death squads, Sectarian cleansing of neighborhoods (by increasing neighborhood bombing runs to over 900 this year so far, up from 200 last year, which killed entire families and not just the one or two insurgents; then there was the sectarian segregation of neighborhoods by fencing in Sunnis with high walls: and also the Sunnis agreed to fight al qaeda instead of US soldiers as long as we agreed to provide them with weapons. The violence was on the way down even before the splurge numbers of troops even got to full level. The results would have been the same whether we had more troops there or not...the violence is down is the headline...not the spurge is working. The spurge was to get breathing room for the Iraq government to make political reconciliation and none has been made. So the splurge didn't work. With violence down and a sort of cease fire going on now is the perfect time to get our troops out of there. But Bush now wants to keep them there permanently. With no political reconciliation the violence is just waiting to explode again. So then what will we try to get political reconciliation since obviously the splurge didn't work...kill ALL the Sunnis?

Murtha's rhetoric just encouraged right wing talking points and was mis understood. He should have just said the surge has helped to get the violence down but is not working to get the political reconciliation it was designed to do...in fact it's been a complete failure in reaching its objective. He needs to think before he opens his mouth for comment.
