1. Benny Hill had the longest-running TV show ever. Something like 40+ years...
Edited on Tue Nov-21-06 09:19 PM by Nozebro
and incredible as it sounds, he wrote every skit, all the dialogue, and all of the lyrics to those great songs he sang. And what about "little" Jackie, the short, bald Irish guy? Was that guy talented enough? I can still see him (Jackie) in the skit where he sang "Baby Lover, I love you so". And, what about that skit where he and Benny were interviewed on a British TV show after they had supposedly just arrived from Areland. The interviewer was a sophisticated gentleman kind of like the late Peter Jennings, and Benny & Jackie answered his question about the first they did when they arrived: "Got two pies". "Toupees? For what? You're sitting there bald." "NO, man. Not toupees. Two PIES. We Wuz hungry". Maybe not so funny in print, but a real hoot when you see them perform the skit.

8. Benny only on the air, 1955-1989, 34 years (with two years off as he changed networks)
Benny Hill's program ran on the BBC from 1955-1967 and then on Thames Television from 1969-1989. Technically 32 years. While it ran 32 years in Britain, Benny Hill in the US is just a cut up of his old programs, thus could be run forever.

http://www.museum.tv/archives/etv/B/htmlB/bennyhillsh/bennyhillsh.htm

In the US the longest running program was "Death Valley Days" which ran 39 years, including its radio days ran from 1931 till 1970 (21 on radio, 18 on Television, this includes the 7 years it was know as "Death Vally Sheriff from 1945-1951 when it switched to Television and reverted to its original name). You rarely hear of it now a days for most of its episodes were Radio or Black and White television only switching to Color in 1964 and off the air in 1970.

9. There are soap operas that have been on TV longer than that
As The World Turns and Guiding Light have both been on television a lot longer than 40 years.

6. Benny Hill Making fun of Dave Allen
Edited on Tue Nov-21-06 11:27 PM by happyslug
Dave Allen was another British Comedian of the time period, Dave Allen was on the BBC as opposed to "Thames" television (Which had Benny after 1969, from 1955 to 1969 Benny was on the BBC). This is one of the best impression of Dave Allen and how no one but Dave Allen could get away with "Ethic" jokes. Dave Allen was good at telling stories about people which were funny. I like Benny Hill and Dave Allen, they both had that dry British Humor.

I saw some of Benny's black and White Television, and I have to say they were better than his later Color (or should I write Colour?) Thames Television material. Even today, with BBC-America, you see Benny's Thames "Color" Programs NOT his BBC Black and White Material.
