That's the newest repuke line in favor of torture. It's similar to saying that if robbing banks wasn't lucrative people wouldn't do it. Torture is absolutely useless in getting accurate and reliable information out of a victim. Other techniques are much more successful.

But the truth is that torture accomplish several things. It terrorizes the population being tortured and it turns the victim into an automaton that will say and do just about anything the torturer tells him/her. It gives the appearance of a willing prisoner and it makes the torturer feel good because they are punishing their enemy, if only symbolically in one person instead of the entire population. With all that going for it, no wonder bush lovers love torture.
