Fire truck catches fire at Magnablend in Waxahachie, Texas. Magnablend is a huge sprawling chemical plant with lethal hazardous chemicals burning now.

2. Very dangerous conditions for those firefighters.
Looks like water's not the answer for this fire. Whatever's burning floats, so the water actually spread the fire. Not good.

3. Yup, oil on fire just floats on water and spreads...
Oil fires are generally fought with foam, not water.

5. Yeah, that's what I was always taught.
My father was a fire chief for many years. So, I've heard fire-fighting stories a lot. My brother and brother-in-law were also on the job, and my nephew is currently an L.A. County firefighter.

10. Thank You Cap'n Firedude (not even close)
nice comment
did you even think that possibly they were risking their lives trying to put out a fire in a room with multiple chemicals that breached their containers with the heat and that is what was flowing out of the building?

Like say oil.

4. From the sound of the company's name,
they are a "blending" plant and don't actually make any of the chemicals being blended. The firefighters would probably have to talk to managers or supervisors and get a manifest of everything inside that could do that. Too late for that truck, of course, but it could save other things, including whatever gets down the sewers...

8. Wow, more good economic news for the vehicle industry!
And not so good for penniless local government in Texas.

9. Never seen that before.. ever.
Was that because they were spraying something over the fire, that it backfired on them? You would think Firemen would know better, if so.

11. That...
...is a complete fail on the local FD's part right there.

1st- Don't pull up right next to the fire.
2nd- Foam not Water on lighter than water materials that catch fire.

16. Easy to say from the armchair.
Foam is nice, but not every piece of fire equipment carries foam.

I drive a 1000 gallon Tanker/Pupmer in rural Arkansas.
We don't HAVE Foam Equipment on our truck.

Sometimes, we drive our trucks THROUGH burning fields to save somebody's house
when that is the only approach.
The driver/pump operator (me) fights the fire around the truck with a 1" red line
while the rest of the crew defends the structures.
Sometimes, (rarely) we lose equipment,
but it DOES happen.
Every one of us would rather risk losing our equipment in a calculated risk
that to watch somebody's house burn.

It is RARELY as clean cut as you have imagined.
My suggestion to you is to Volunteer at your local Fire Dept.

Foam is not 'nice', it's necessary.

21. Dousing surrounding structures with WATER...
...to cool them and keep them from exploding is ALSO necessary,
and SOP.
If there is a chance of keeping the burning structure from melting down and releasing the chemicals contained,
dousing with water will also be used directly on the fire in that application.

Have you ever watched the Fire Boats spraying WATER on burning Oil Platforms?
They aren't trying to put out the fire.
They are trying to keep the platform from Melting Down,
and making everything worse.

13. As an active Fire Fighter,
I strongly object to your post.
Not only does it show huge depth of ignorance,
but it also displays a complete lack of appreciation and empathy for these heroes who
risk their lives and equipment attempting to protect YOU and YOUR property.

Fire Departments DO lose vehicles.
That IS part of the deal.
Hoses are limited in length.
To fight fires, it IS necessary to get close to the fire.
Sometimes, the unexpected happens,
or sometimes, we make a conscious decision to RISK ourselves & our vehicles
to protect YOU & YOURS.

If YOUR house was on fire,
would YOU want the firefighters to get close enough to put it out?
What if your B-B-Q propane tank explodes and sets their equipment on fire,
would YOU be laughing and calling FAIL?

Shame on YOU!
You should be THANKING these heroes,
and taking up a collection to help them replace their equipment!
OR, better yet, GO VOLUNTEER and put YOUR Life where your mouth is.
It would open your eyes & your heart.

15. Thank you! I think part of the snark has to do with this being Texas
Folks around here love to have fun with our drought and anytime we have misfortune.

18. Misfortune?
If this particular fire department was short-handed or ill-equipped because of Goodol'Boy's budget cuts, that's not misfortune, that's criminal stupidity he should be impeached for.

23. Fine. Then why make light of it?
Seems like DUers are having their jollies over our "misfortunes". Drought and extreme heat wave - some like to laugh about Perry and forget about the people suffering. And please don't say they deserve it because they voted for Perry. Have heard plenty of that from DU as well.

19. I posted that there was fire at a chemical plant, and that a fire truck caught fire.

I see nothing funny or snarky about posting this. It wasn't made in a joking manner.

I posted it in accordance with DU policy which states that one must include the title listed from the YouTube video. So the language used in the title of the video IS NOT MINE.

If you are objecting to what others say, then fine. But I can't be held responsible for what others say or do.

I don't know exactly what your problem is (feel free to quote from my post and tell me exactly what you object to), but it ain't me.

You are entitled to your opinion, as am I.

20. As an active, experienced Fire Fighter,
...my opinion weighs more than yours does in this matter.
That is WHY I have been entrusted with a Pumper/Tanker and a crew.

Losing a piece of equipment fighting a fire is NO more "FAIL"
than the army losing a tank in a battle.
It IS part of the JOB, but avoided if at all possible.
We don't give trucks to Cowboys,
but we also don't give them to the Timid.

My objection is to the "FAIL" in the title,
but I also realize that Video Titles must be posted exactly as they appear.
I would have chosen NOT to post a Video with such a title, or added a disclaimer.

When I post something to DU without a disclaimer,
I take on the responsibility of endorsing the post.

28. Thanks.

When I reread my posts, I realize I was a little Over the Top last night.
I was pissed, and consumed with a "You don't know how it really is" fever.

I love the Guys & Gals on our department & brotherhood, and trust them with my life.
Cheap Shots, 2nd guessing, and Ridicule from Armchair Critics pushes a button with me.

25. If there is any "fail" here it is in the lack of codes or enforcement thereof of measures ...
... to prevent this sort of spread in the ANTICIPATED event of fire. Sprinklers and a berm to prevent spread of flammable liquids would be a nice thought. But that would be communism.

I'm not sure it's in the posted video: I got it from the NBC local news (which has been covering nothing else for 2 days now... oh, that and 1/3 of the newscast is sports). Gotta keep the mindless sheep distracted from the real world: keep them rooting for their team or against the other team or whatever.
