14. Ever notice there are no Michele Bachmanns on the "left"?
(I use "left" in quotes because what gets called the "far left" by the wingnuts is actually a bit right of center, not that they can tell.)

I have always assumed that the reason there are no Bill Maher or Jon Stewart characters on the right is that conservatives simply have no sensitivity to wit, humor, irony, parody, satire, nuance, or any of the other qualities that these commentators have. The conservative idea of "humor" is saying nasty things about weak, vulnerable people who can't defend themselves. "Bully humor", you might say. (These are the people who support torture, you will recall.)

Remember the abortion that was the "Fox News Half Hour Comedy Hour" or whatever the idiotic thing was called? I have never seen such a grotesque, unfunny, sickening display of right-wing "humor", unless you count the disgusting drivel we get from the likes of Dennis Miller, who I guess they consider "funny".

Having said that, here's the other side of the coin. There simply are no Democrats, liberals, or progressives on the scene who are stupid, loony and goofy in the way Bachmann, Palin, Cain, and the whole rogues' gallery of far-right-wing extremist assholes are. We have no Newt Gingrich. We have no Sharron Angle. We have no Christine "I Am Not A Witch" O'Donnell. If conservatives were capable of satire, exactly who would they poke fun at? Harry Reid? Dick Durbin?

Seriously, can anyone suggest a far-out "leftist" Democrat who, even by wingnut "standards", could be considered to be a whack-job in the manner of, say, Rep. Steve King? Who on our side resembles Palin or Bachmann in any way? Are there any? Anyone? Bueller?

22. You've nailed it. RW humor comes from the brain stem
If you could imagine the sense of humor of a reptile (no 'emotions' as we know them, no nurturing beyond programmed behaviors), then you've pretty much got right-wing humor. Think slapstick, crude practical jokes involving bodily fluids, and a lot of laughing at others' misfortune. And then there's sheeple humor, or monkey humor. Most of us are familiar with this - this is based in our emotional self. This is the part that finds social gaffes and status screwups to be funny, as well as much humor surrounding sex and group or clique membership. Anything that jokes about who or what is 'in' or 'out' usually falls in here. And then there's cerebral cortex humor. Language, intellect, multiple frames, all the complex stuff that makes, say, XKCD what it is.

When I tried to think of genuine leftist wingnuts, I had to go back to the sixties, and the ones I was thinking of all became right-wingers later. I think they only joined the left because of the potential for violence, and then they realized that if you're going to throw bombs, you want to be on the side with the bigger ones.

Yeah, for chrissakes, even the SLA's policy statements made more sense than the T(errorist) party. They had a goal beyond destruction, as unrealistic and stupid as it was. The right seems to think that, even if humanity degenerates to being just another primate barely holding on, that they will somehow still be the alpha males, and therefore everything will be just fine. As long as they're on top, going back to being pond scum is a tolerable cost.

17. Comedy = truth
I think the best way we can bust the right wingers and Tea Baggers is through humor. If we can get our messages across with humor and pointing out absurdity, people will listen.

I love how Maher points out the Tea Bagger's hypocrisy. I hope the majority of Americans see through their BS too.

19. One of Maher's better pieces.
Edited on Wed Aug-03-11 09:53 AM by JayhawkSD
Lawrence O'Donnell featured this on his show the other day, I think it was a "Rewrite" but I'm not sure of that, and he preceeded it with a really good discussion of his own on the subject. Unfortunately, there seems to be no clip of it at the website, because it was a really good piece.

I would have one small quibble with Maher when he says that "their clinic takes Medicaid." The Medicaid benefit is to the patient, not to Bachmann's clinic. What is he supposed to do, not treat the patient because he doesn't accept payment from the government? Some would say that would be as unethical as refusing to treat them because they could not pay or did not have insurance, and I think I would be in that number. Refusing to treat people because they are on Medicaid? I think that issue is stretching criticism a little bit.

On the other hand, farm subisdies and the mortgage thing... Go for it.

26. Jayhawk,I am confused. Hospitals and Dr.'s refuse to treat
Edited on Wed Aug-03-11 12:23 PM by dotymed
people every day in America because the "patient" does not have insurance or the money. It is (unfortunately and unbelievably) an accepted American practice in the medical profession. This is not (these days) considered unethical in in America in any way. It has become codified in the American medical profession. I would be very surprised to hear that most American physicians or their staff, do not inform at least one person a day, that they "cannot" treat them because they are uninsured or cannot afford to be treated. I have a sister with nose cancer and no insurance or job. She has been informed by more than one Dr., in America, that she must pay (quite a sum) "upfront" if she wants to be treated.

Since her cancer is not categorized as deadly (merely horribly disfiguring) she is not eligible for medicaid (or medicare).

I have called Dr.'s offices and been informed that since the Dr. did not accept my insurance, payment "upfront" would be required.

I really do not understand your "quibble", many American Dr.'s do not accept Medicaid and will not treat you unless you can pay; pre-treatment. It is in complete disregard of the "Hippocratic Oath", but it is a universally American accepted practice.

I agree with Bill and so do the polls. The majority of Americans want socialism. Of course, the polls are not worded that way because of the negative connotations associated with the "S" word.

The conclusion is the same. Most Americans want universal health care. During the "debt ceiling" dog and pony show, almost 60% of Americans wanted to end the tax cuts for the wealthy and leave social programs untouched.

Of course the politicians do not vote the way that the majority wants (Democracy?), they vote in favor of the wealthy. Wow, what a surprise..

Yes, we really do (as a majority) want Socialism, yet, because of the propaganda produced by wealthy capitalists and believed by the uneducated, our majority would never openly support that "word."

edited to add the word "American" in Many places in the OP, because among the worlds "civilized" nations, America is unique in not having some form of universal (non-profit) health care for the entire population.

BTW, mainly because of the generosity of fellow D.U.'ers she is going to be treated this Friday. We (thank you) have enough of a down payment to get her treated properly.

Edited on Wed Aug-03-11 12:10 PM by LaPera
Bill doesn't seem to get it, that People pay into Social Security every week, every paycheck some for 40 or 50 years or longer....It at least generates revenue and has been the most successful program, progressive program this country & government has ever know and retains solvency projected until at least 2042 (unless the fucking republicans completely destroy it and privatize it for deregulated corporations to steal our retirement & pensions...by fling bankruptcies and keeping it all sending more people to the streets!

Uh, Bill the much larger pentagon NOT including the republicans trillion dollar wars for profit receive much more and don't create a dime in revenue, the much larger defense imperialist just suck up our taxes for weapons makers and other corporate profit and generals and admirals to use military jets & bases to play golf and vacation around the world....Not to mention obsolete weapons and massive over-charging.
