that's who needs to be suspended without pay for this shit. But they won't.

first off, the photog had no business interviewing the kid without the permission of his parents/guardians. Period.

secondly, the writer wrote the editing instructions and explicitly told the editor where to make the cut. At this point in time only the photog and the writer knew what was on the tape in its entirety because the photog shot it and the writer had to listen to it and watch it in order to write the story, pick the broll and pick the bites.

The EP approved the script and was fine with letting it go to air as the writer wrote it--didn't ask questions, and it looks like they didn't ask to see the raw video in order to listen to the context of the this interview with the child. If they didn't, then they're as much to blame for this as the writer. Which means the writer purposefully and willfully withheld the rest of the bite with the intent to get the effect they were after when they sent this in for editing. Or maybe they have writer/editors who edit the VOSOTS they write for the newscast and an editor was not involved at all in this.

If an editor was involved, then they edited exactly what was given in instructions. That they objected will never be known because it's apparent that someone edited it--the writer, the editor--to the instructions given by the writer, approved by the EP, and that's what made it to air.

That is how the chain of command works in a news operation.

That someone in there took a cell phone vid of what was actually on the tape in its entirety and for that, one must be grateful.

I used to work in film editing. For a while I worked at a television station. One of the cardinal rules is that you absolutely CANNOT edit dialogue to misrepresent what the person was saying. I know that rule doesn't exist today like it once did. We've all been foxified. But the editor and producer of this clip crossed a line. They need to go!

I have worked in a newsroom for 90% of my career. Someone shot that tape, someone viewed that tape in order to write their story and someone approved the script before it went in for editing.

Someone edited that story and with the way newsrooms are set up now, chances are, it's not necessarily the editor who edited it. Chances are, because of the way newsrooms are set up now, the writer wrote and edited that VOSOT. If there are editors still in the local news business, they pretty much do the packages, which this wasn't, and do playback of the newscast.

43. if this happened at 4:30 in the morning,

then this is stringer video. They used one of those stringer outfits--the ones with police scanners in their cars--and they run and fetch stories all night long because newsrooms no longer staff photogs overnight to cruise and tape these stories.

Generally speaking, stringers are photogs who have been laid off or can't get work in a news shop, so they resort to being, basically, little whores. Then they drop by the news desk to hand off their tapes for the morning newscasts and a writer/newscast producer or assistant producer, takes the tape, views it and writes the story and probably edits it. The actual news crew rolls in around 4:00 am and are sent out on the live shots for the morning around 4:15-4:30.

48. This is ridiculous! This was such an obvious

case of racism and stereotyping. They just couldn't pass up the chance to make blacks look like bad parents. There is no way you can argue in the opposite direction. The editor could have let the video run for another five seconds and the segment would have been fine, or, if he felt that it didn't fit he could have left out the entire discussion with the child. The fact that he left the discussion in there without including the child's reason for his answer is despicable.
