Recent polls show terrible news for President Obama. Will his base turn out for the 2012 election? Cenk Uygur breaks it down.

1. "1 in 4 say he NOT LIBERAL enough"-those who disapprove
of his performance. WHOW--the video said--this will blow away conventional wisdom (then went into how Fox always refers to him as a socialist).

33. The conclusion has become inescapable.
While most Democrats feel social security and medicare are sacrosanct, the president has demonstrated that he does not. What does this tell the mainstream members of the Democratic Party? It tells them that President Obama is not on their team, he is on team Wall Street and team military industrial complex. This is not who we thought we elected. Millions of us now recognize this.

5. Primary Obama WITH Gov. Andrew Cuomo. . .
Edited on Wed Jul-27-11 08:48 AM by Lena inRI
. . .these polls, Cenk, are more reason to consider Governor Andrew Cuomo as a VERY viable primary Obama challenger. Let me repost why:

As for Governor Andrew Cuomo. . .if he's a chip off the old block (former Gov Mario Cuomo), I guarantee he'd be a PROGRESSIVE DEMOCRAT. . .ya know. . .a Democrat like they used to be.

Listen to Cuomo Senior's famous 1984 speech. . .still resonates for us today. . .the more things change, the more they stay the same. . .

http://www.americanrhetoric.com/speeches/mariocuomo1984dnc.htm (video & transcript 8 min)

As for Cuomo Junior, his positions on many issues are a work in progress, but on certain core Democratic values, he's solid. . .workers/civil rights, public financing of elections, government-run health care.

http://www.ontheissues.org/Andrew_Cuomo.htm

So, those 45 % of Democrats who would want to primary Obama, the Cuomos' time has come. . .before the Democratic Party self-destructs . . .

Edited to fix speech link

And if that fails again, try this link to speech:

15. Cuomo is way too conservative and too close to the Koch Brothers.
Forget about him. He is a sell-out worse than Obama.

The Koch brothers and the Democrats

I linked yesterday to Ira Stoll's report about David and Julia Koch's contributions to Andrew Cuomo, and his thoughts about why it's happening, and was promptly reminded that Julia Koch is one of the "Republicans for Cuomo."

Now, Ben adds another factor that pushes back on the notion of the Koch brothers as creatures of the right wing, with a list of Democrats to whom they gave money to in 2010, totalling nearly $200,000.

http://www.politico.com/blogs/maggiehaberman/0910/The_Koch_brothers_and_the_Democrats_.html

Other lucky (blue) dogs who got Koch money.

Their (The Koch's) largest gift: $30,000 to the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.

The PAC, though, gave to a wide range of largely Blue Dog Democrats, some of whom have been sympathetic to the interests of the privately held oil company, but who also voted for, among other things, the health care overhaul the Kochs bitterly oppose.

Blanche Lincoln and her PAC were the top recipients, with at least $10,000 in the 2010 cycle; $10,000 chunks went to Ben Nelson, Mary Landrieu, Mark Pryor, and health care architect Max Baucus, alogn with Blue Dog Rep. Mike Ross. Other Blue Dogs in the House, like Marion Berry and Chet Edwards, also got big checks. Chuck Schumer received $1,000 of KOCHPAC money this year.

23. Ugh!. . .
. . .thanks, JDPriestly, for the dose of reality. . .too bad for the Party. . .Cuomo Senior was the one who should have been President . . .I bet he's despairing over the neo-liberal destruction of the Democratic Party, especially his own son.

So, where are the real viable progressive Democrats?

Looking over the Congressional Progressive Caucus would be a start. . .

http://cpc.grijalva.house.gov/index.cfm?sectionid=71§iontree=2,71

Course, Elizabeth Warren would be my dream candidate.

Heck, I'd even consider George Clooney after reading this background article on his family and activist life:

http://usliberals.about.com/od/celebrityactivists/a/GClooney.htm

And he's sure easy on the eyes. . .LOL . . .he'd get the 30% sheeple WOMEN for sure

9. Exactly - Let them win!!
I am ready to let the GOP have their way. It is the only way that the stupid poor people who vote for them are ever going to come to their senses. Let them cut and gut every last govt agency, from the FAA to Social Security. Only when all of the idiots who think that they don't benefit from govt programs are shown otherwise will their eyes be opened.

I say cut ALL govt assistance to the elderly, the poor, and the disabled, and do it TODAY. That is what will have to happen to wake these stupid MF's up. Throw their parents out of the nursing home, cut the money that pays for their in-home nurses, cut the money that pays for the medical procedures and drugs that prolong their pathetic lives.
Give them an oppurtunity to be free of the nanny state that is holding them back from their true potential as self-sufficient Americans. Let them inspect their China-made baby food for botulism themselves. When the road they take to work buckles from the heat wave, let them fix it. When their well water is ruined forever by a fracking company, let them handle it personally. Let all of the farmers who vote GOP run their farms without the billions of govt dollars that they depend on.

I am sick of all of this bullshit, and I really believe that the only way to turn this piece of shit country around is to LET THEM CUT IT ALL, NOW!

13. I'm with you, Rowdy.
I see the hypocrisy all of the time where people who depend and benefit most from public programs are the ones calling for their elimination, apparently not realizing what the consequences are. I'm afraid the proverbial frying pan in the face is the only way to wake the people of this country up.

To the people who want to eliminate Social Security and Medicare: I hope you're willing to take in your dependent parents or other close relatives and furnish their food and other necessities.

To those who think EPA, FDA, OSHA and other agencies should be eliminated: Don't come crying when you or a loved one is diagnosed with cancer because of exposure to carcinogens next to their homes, or don't cry if you or a loved one loses a limb or life because of lack of safeguards in the workplace.

When your home is on fire and volunteer firefighters have to arrive at the scene from 10 miles away because your local fire protection was eliminated due to budget cuts - Don't come crying to me.

When you have to constantly repair your vehicles because the roads are rough and tear up your suspension system, kwitcherbellyachingatme!

But we always will have the money to invade countries with our mighty military to smoke out those terrorists!

41. Spot on!
The best way to fight stupid is to teach people a lesson even if they have to learn the hard way. Let the GOP do their own dirty work. Electing Democrats to do it for them only taints our party. Once people get the cold slap in the face that is the utter reality of the GOP's agenda it will be the end of the conservative movement for the next 40 years.

16. Your little -- primary a president and he will lose does not work at all
Edited on Wed Jul-27-11 02:21 PM by JDPriestly
if you look at history.

Presidents who are unpopular with a large enough portion of their base lose.

Those particular presidents often face either a primary challenge or a third party challenge.

And they inevitably lose.

Lyndon B. Johnson was the most professional vote-counter that has ever sat in the White House.

He lost the support of a good portion of his party -- and did not even dare to run. He read the tea leaves (uh, the newspapers showing his activists were not with him).

Carter was a one-term president. One crisis after another divided his party. And he was challenged. What came first, losing the support of a good chunk of his base or the primary? I think that the loss of support encouraged Kennedy to challenge him.

George H.W. Bush raised taxes and supported the idea of free trade. In addition, the economy was weak during his administration, and he was perceived as too liberal on social issues and criticized for not "finishing the job" in Iraq. He lost the support of much of his base. He was not primaried but faced a strong third party challenge in the general election.

Clinton managed to bamboozle his base into thinking he was on their side. He also benefited from a robust economy. At the end of his presidency, a small but significant enough minority of his party broke off to support Nader -- who waged a third party challenge to Gore, Clinton's vice president.

George W. Bush kept his bloodthirsty base satiated with his wars and boogeyman rhetoric. They stuck with him through his second term (although he may have cheated a bit both in 2000 and 2004).

Obama has lost a good hunk of his base. He would have to work a miracle to get it back.

Obama may win in 2012, but he will do it without his base. The only strategy that will work is for him to forge what would essentially be a whole brand new third party made up of traditionalists in the Republican Party and the conservatives in the Democratic Party.

In any event, we old-fashioned Democrats will be left to form a new Democratic Party. I don't think Obama can run as a Democrat and attract the business-oriented but not Tea-Party Republicans. And that seems to me to be the only way he can win. It could be that Obama will break off from the Democratic Party for 2012. It's just a possibility, not a prediction. But that Obama will regain the support of the traditional Democratic base -- no, I don't think so.

And remember, presidents who are not supported by their base don't win. That's actually what the history shows you.

22. 5 Myths About Cenk Leaving MSNBC
Myth 1 - Cenk was replaced because Sharpton got better ratings for two weeks while Cenk was on vacation.

Cenk was told he wouldn't be getting the show BEFORE Sharpton filled in for him. This was at the end of June. That in and of itself makes Sharpton's ratings totally irrelevant to this story. In http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5x7o0sNrulg&feature=channel_video_title|his announcement> on TYT Cenk correctly points out that once he (to an extent) started doing the show his way the ratings went up AND that in the 3 months that make up Q2 of 2011 he beat CNN and improved on Schultz'z ratings from last year (he praises Schultz in that clip btw).

Myth 2 - Cenk claims the Obama White House came down on MSNBC.

Cenk never got more specific than what MSNBC president Phil Griffin told him. People in Washington may or may not include someone at the White House, and Cenk made a point to NOT say it was the White House.

Myth 3 - Cenk was demoted, then fired when he didn't accept the demotion.

Cenk was offered a weekend show/contributor role for double the money. Can you think of any other jobs in which you get less responsibility and exposure and a gigantic raise? Also, the NY Times reported that he was well liked at MSNBC but more importantly here's a direct quote from an http://www.huffingtonpost.com/democracy-now/cenk-uygur-leaves-msnbc_b_906708.html|MSNBC spokesman>:

...we were working on a new contract, to develop him into an even bigger television talent.

Myth 4 - MSNBC wouldn't let go of Cenk for his harsh criticism of politicians and then go on to hire a firebreathing bull like Sharpton.

In a recent 60 Minutes interview http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/07/25/cenk-uygur-al-sharpton-is_n_908385.html|Sharpton vowed not to criticize president Obama>. Leave it to HuffPo to make the headline more inflammatory but there it is.

Myth 5 - Cenk is unemployed/he hosts some obscure web show.

Glossing over the fact that Cenk has been interviewing Senators (Ted Kennedy, Bernie Sanders, Harry Reid, etc.), Congressman (long list), former presidents (Jimmy Carter), Fed chairmen (Alan Greenspan), talk show hosts (Rachel Maddow, Lou Dobbs, Stephanie Miller, Thom Hartmann, etc.), filmmakers (Michael Moore, Robert Greenwald), journalists/reporters (Matt Taibbi and people from the NY Times, WaPo, HuffPo and everything in between) there's this:

Count me among the 45 percent who think he should be primaried. Competition is healthy. It's the American way. It gives us consumers a better product. That's why we have anti-monopoly laws. When we have to buy or use a product in a market where there's no competition, the company becomes arrogant, jacks up prices and ignores complaints. Gee, who does that sound like?

It only works for so long because it implies that even if your guy wins, you still lose.

Voting is like any other decision we make as human beings. There is emotion involved.

"Vote for me and have a slower fall to the barrel bottom!" just doesn't inspire a lot of positive motivation.

Thats' why Obama's original slogan was Change, not Status Quo.
