then instead of talking about how wonderful the team is and how hard they tried to win and what a great effort they made we would instead be talking about how the championship was theirs for the taking and how badly they *choked* in losing to Japan.
If a mens team had gone up by a goal with 11 minutes in regulation or even worse gone up by a goal with only 2 minutes left in overtime and been unable to collapse the defense and hold on for the win then they would most certainly be soundly criticized instead of praised like the women.
But even that pales to the reality of their choke. The odds of making a penalty kick are at least 90% and that is being extremely generous to the goalie's actual chance of blocking a PK particularly when the opposing goalie is only 5'4" and is guarding a regulation 24' x 8' goal. So on top of being unable to hold a lead for a few minutes twice during regular play the team missed *three* penalty kick's in a row to lose the game.
So while Japan winning is certainly a good feel good story after the troubles that country has had, an US fan needs to face the truth and admit that Japan did not win, the US lost in about as monumental choke as there ever has been.
Of course if women *don't* in fact want to be treated as men would be treated, then OK honey, "at least they tried."
