Oct. 3, 2007: Is President Bush right for vetoing a children's health insurance bill? The bill would increase health coverage for poor children to families making up to three times the poverty level. Rachel Maddow and Pat Buchanan join Chris Matthews to discuss.

1. Pat Buchanan
I must say that every time that I see Mr. Buchanan on TV that
chills go up & down my spine. The Klan mentality is alive
and well and that makes me ill. BEYONCE WELCH -Hoping That

12. I enjoyed the looks of concentration when he tried to think of a comeback
I swear at one point I thought I saw him counting his fingers. Rachel Maddow's doing very well for herself.

3. "that is not a health care system that is a policy failure"
Rachel was great. It is refreshing to see mind versus ideology.

5. That was an awesome line, and PB left the door wide open
by saying the poor parents aren't paying for their kids' healthcare if they are using the emergency dept.

4. There is no way for the GOPers to spin this favorably for the
chimperor. He tried to do the same thing in Texas: limit eligibility to 1.5 times poverty level versus the 2 times the legislature recommended. (I think those were the numbers, but it was in the mid-1990s.) Later, when the program was very successful in getting Texas kids healthcare, Gov. Shrub took credit for the success, of course.

13. it occurred to me that Bush's veto is a setup.
The R. party is hurting badly and I wonder if a few R's would be 'allowed' to vote to overturn the veto in order to have something to campaign on next year.

18. My hope is that such a plan will backfire as they all get painted
with the same brush as another faithful Bushie. But anything is possible with Rove behind the scenes.

6. Democracy
BuchananL "That doesn't make it right because people want it and may vote for it."

Oh, dear. And here I thought that that was, in fact, the whole principle of democracy.

I guess it must work differently from what I had thought.

7. How can Buchanan and Spit-wad say that we can't have
kids health care without funding. My God they have been running an illegal war that has yet to make it on the books. I would love to hear someone ask when we will be shown the accounting of this war and how these thug Repuglicans are intending to pay for it. Quite simply they don't intend to pay for it, it will become the Democrats nightmare.

I hadn't listened to Mr. Buchanan in a long time. He comes off as even more ridiculously hidebound in this interview.

9. Rachel was great.
And Buchanan and Matthews were just squawking and shrieking and sounded hysterical. Rachel totally had the upper hand - she got in some great points.

May I also just add that she looked gorgeous.

16. I liked how PB said (paraphrasing) that just because Bush
keeps flushing all of our money down the toilet, that it would be good for him to stop doing that. (Gee, ya think, Pat?) And Tweets getting all upset b/c the Dems aren't financing it! Is W. paying for our grand conquest, Tweety? I used to think such blatant hypocrisy would be glaringly self-obvious. Now I realize it is, but it doesn't stop them.

17. If Rachel Maddow were any sharper
She would be sold on some shopping channel as a Japanese steak knife.

I have rarely seen anyone think on their feet and keep their cool
as well as she does. We need her out there on national TV more often!

19. Corporate Welfare
As usual Rachel sounds like the only adult in the room. And the Repugs CAN throw whatever name they want at it and it won't stick. They so often use the shield and armor of "it's for the children!" it's refreshing to see it backfire on them.

But why whenever the "threat" of socialism rears it's head, no one reminds Repugs of the vast amounts of corporate welfare they hand out. Why do commentators not point out socialism for bushiness is OK with conservatives, it's just socialism for individuals they abhor?

carrier some 25 years ago. It seemed so simple then and it still seems simple now.

Her responses seem so measured and thought out unlike Pat who is simply towing that party line.

23. Sad sad day for Bush when he has to trot out tired old Buchanan to make
his points.

Yeah, I'm feelin' so sorry for them.
No moral high ground.
No ground at all.

The evil bastards.
They deserve each other.

Yipppppeee Rachel.
Might she flash that beautiful smile and fabulous brain all over the media!
More and more!

24. She did an excellent job!
She's a really great spokesperson for progressive ideas. Finally we have someone who is intelligent and articulate who stays on point and is not afraid to aggressively defend her position. Thank you Rachel! By the way, I listen to her show every night while I'm feeding my 17 month old son and cooking dinnner.

25. TKO
It was generous of Buchanon to admit that Bush has been failing at being fiscally wise, but funny that he thinks this bill is where he should start being prudent -- $35 billion over five years for helping little American kids as opposed to nearly $200 billion for one year for Iraq/Afghanistan? It's like he slugged himself in the jaw with that one.
