GOP war on workers' rights threatens middle class
Robert Reich

The battle has resumed in Wisconsin. The state Supreme Court has allowed Gov. Scott Walker to strip bargaining rights from state workers.

Meanwhile, legislators in New Hampshire and officials in Missouri are attacking private unions, seeking to make the states so-called "open shop," where workers can get all the benefits of being union members without paying union dues. Needless to say this ploy undermines the capacity of unions to do much of anything. Other Republican governors and legislatures are following suit.

Republicans in Congress are taking aim at the National Labor Relations Board, which is proposing relatively minor rules changes allowing workers to vote on whether to unionize soon after a union has been proposed, rather than allowing employers to delay the vote for years. Many employers have used the delaying tactics to retaliate against workers who try to organize, and intimidate others into rejecting a union.

This war on workers' rights is an assault on the middle class, and it is undermining the American economy.

2. Sadly, I don't hear any of these people talking about
Clarence Thomas or Scalia.

They, along with Robert's, are the reason our country is allowing unlimited corporate money in politics.

Thomas has already shot himself in the foot. Why aren't they screaming for impeachment of this openly, ethically challenged "Justice?" Unbelievably Eric Holder has not made a 'peep ' about this scandal. It is like he is a member of the MSM.

Until we change the make-up of the SCOTUS, we cannot overturn "Citizens United."( Is that an Orwellian name or what?)

I conclude that corporate governance is what our "leaders" prefer.

Civil Disobedience, seems to be our only recourse. If I have to crawl to D.C. on October 6, I will get there. I hope this is our line in the sand. If not now, fuck it, we are done.

3. Burton is a prime example of what is wrong with Obama's strategy
Edited on Sun Jun-26-11 04:20 PM by JDPriestly
1) He talks about "core values" in vague, abstract terms. But he can't seem to really talk in concrete terms. Why? Well, maybe because he doesn't really think about them in concrete terms. Is he talking about good high-wage jobs for Americans? Is he talking about reasonably priced health care for all? Is he talking about a high GDP? Is he talking about a booming stock market? Are we supposed to guess?

Worse yet, Obama doesn't seem to know what his "core values" are. He talks about the environment, but next thing you know he is signing off on more and more oil drilling.

So it seems like "core values" is just a buzz word that Burton has been told to use. But basically, Burton appears to be just a slick fund-raiser with loose lips -- a salesman who will say anything to get the sale.

2) Obama had a majority in Congress and a big majority of voters behind him in when he took office 2009. But, face it, he blew it.

He came in on the promise of change. He was going to get rid of corruption in government and promote openness.

But what has he done? Guantanamo -- the symbol of secrecy is still in operation. He has continued two corrupt wars and is getting us involved in more and more military adventures from which only military contractors profit.

His entire tenure in office has been a sell-out to the rich and to Wall Street.

If he had not so offended Democratic activists that even a rudimentary GOTV effort is in jeopardy, he would not need to beg money from big business.

This begging money from big business is precisely the kind of corruption that Obama promised he would stop. And now look at him. It is a disgrace.

I'd rather a man who jilts his wife than a man who jilts the working people, the poor and the middle class.

7. Saddly - I think war aptly characterizes the GOP but
where is the defense? I wasn't convinced that there was any passion coming from Lautenberg.
