In another sign of just how bad our nation is treating the working class - a new
study by the Employee Benefit Research Institute shows that most Americans today
will have to work until their late seventies - before they can think about
retiring. According to the study - If you make roughly $31,000 a year - which is
about the average for 40% of Americans - and more than twice minimum wage -
you’ll have to work until you’re 76-years-old just to have a chance at retiring.
And I say chance because even if you do work until 76 - you still only have a
fifty-fifty shot at having enough money to live off in retirement - a
fifty-fifty chance IF you don’t get sick - IF your house isn’t blown away in a
tornado - or IF you’re pension isn’t stolen by banksters on Wall Street. This
Republican idea of forcing Americans to work until they die is unacceptable -
this isn’t a death camp…this is the United States of America. Let’s rebuild the
middle-class - and take care of our elderly.

1. I like the "cash for geezers" idea, because as much as I am
worried about dragging my sorry butt to work when I'm 70+, I worry about the young people who will be living at home, under on unemployed until they are in their 30s.

Repubs, we tried this once before. It was called the DEPRESSION. Guess you all think WE (and of course, not you or your overlords) need to live that over again, eh?

Lost decade will turn into a lost generation soon.

2. Everything Thom Harmann says presumes the Republicans care
about people. They don't. And with no one defending the people anymore except passively, the Republicans will do exactly what they want, moving us into corporate feudalism. For old people like me it doesn't matter. But the young ones, 15 to 20 years younger than me (I am 65), it will be a disaster bordering on absolute horror. And the biggest problem is there is no core group left with enough intrinsic values brave enough to fight the corporate masters.

3. One of the big benefits of cash for geezers --
Grandparents will be able to help care for their grandchildren.

Children in other cultures benefit from the love and contributions of their grandparents. Not here. It is one of the reasons that our children suffer so much and do not do as well in school as children in some other countries.

Grandparents have a lot to offer to their children and grandchildren. We are fools to keep them working at jobs at which they are no longer so efficient when their grandchildren are being cared for by nannies. It's a big mistake we are making.
