3. That Is So Not Portland Normally
I live in Portland and I've never felt unsafe holding my boyfriend's hand. The city is so safe and accepting, but under the Hawthorne bridge at night is not really a place I'd want to be whether or not I'm holding hands. To me, it would be a scary place in the dark.

FYI for those of you who don't live here there is a big parking lot there. I would guess they were parked there and returning to their car.

13. To Start With

In the video one of them clearly says they were under the bridge. I suspect the miscreants followed them across and under the bridge to the parking lot and attacked them under the bridge. Or maybe they just wanted to have a nice moonlight walk on the Esplanade.

There isn't really any place with enough space to attack people on either end of the Hawthorne bridge without getting run down by cars. Either the attackers or the victims would probably have been hit by a car. You're in PDX. You know that. Unless they went on past 1st on one side or Grand on the other. Given what's on 1st or Grand there I can't see why they'd be walking past the end of the bridge.

23. re-viewed the video
You're right, they were under the bridge, "about halfway down" one of them says around a minute into the video. I disagree that there's no room to be attacked on the bridge (it's wide enough for pedestrians and bicycles), but that's hardly important. And, yes, not typical of Portland. But the rose festival waterfront amusement park brings less desirable elements into town (imo), and it looks like this happened the first or second day it was open.

5. People just can't leave people alone. There always has to be a mark, a target for
these ignorant F'ed up bigots to go after, and some segments of our society bless and reward them for their behavior. It's no wonder IMO people join Pink Pistols http://www.pinkpistols.org/

Which reminds me of the way Jasper Johns (who is gay, I believe) expressed that same notion.

25. they can't beat blacks anymore
can't beat jews, can't beat mexicans, and really can't beat muslims either, in their minds do to political correctness, yet in their minds it is still P C to beat gays. Gays could carry guns to protect themselves and that would make beating them randomly less PC, it seemed to have been one of the ideas of malcolm x and the black panthers that blacks should arm themselves, i think gays should do the same.

28. tell me about it: I spent yesterday in Michelle Bachmann territory
and the words 'political correctness' (with the Republican sneer included) was said at least once. What gets me, you cannot have any debate with these people. They have no facts; they have no compassion for "others"; they think Thomas Jefferson was one of Them... No one can tell them otherwise. Bra1nw4shed.

6. That isn't typical for Oregon, especially Portland
since it is one of the more liberal places in the US. It does go to show it can happen anywhere though.

11. Exactly why concealed carry permits are a great thing.
We have citizens who need the extra protection in this nation chock full of ignorance and religious tea-bagging freaks. Could have prevented yet another gay bashing.

Yeah...

so the attackers could have just pulled out their concealed weapons and shot the two fags! Right?

Or didn't you think of that?

I'm always amazed...The state is a lot of "organic", tons of runners and bikers BUT it seems like everybody smokes.

What the heck is up with that?

27. smokes tobacco or cannabis?
Edited on Sun May-29-11 03:30 PM by reggie the dog
if you see mountain bikers smoking a "cigarette" while they are out on a bike ride i can nearly guarantee that it is a cannaibis joint, not a tobacco ciggie. same for someone out by the sea jogging who stops to smoke, likely cannabis and not tobacco. There is prabably a lot of organic oregon grown cannabis for them to smoke.

Agreed, shame is it's the actions of the few violent idiots that get all the attention.
I've never had a problem standing up for my friends who believe differently than I or who have different preferences.
If you don't stand up, you risk having your country and the freedom you believe in taken away from all.

24. Fucking brutes,
what kind of thought process would be going on in someones head when they do such a beating? really? "hmm, 2 guys holding hands, they will never try to steal my girlfriend from me, i better kick their ass".... or is it more "if my own family weren't such dicks i could do that, but because i can't, neither can you"....

if i were out and about on my own (i am 32 and fit) i would jump in to defend a gay couple the same as i would jump in to save anyone from a random act of violence so long as weapons are not involved, but in the case of gay bashing i would be fighting for my ideals too, fighting for freedom, justice, and what is right.
