Palmdale (KTLA) -- A woman slit her daughters' throats before slitting her own early Friday evening, claiming that "the Tribulation" was going to occur and she wanted to prevent them from suffering through it, officials said.

Lyn Benedetto, 47, reportedly told her daughters to lie on a bed and proceeded to take a knife to their throats.

The suspect then took the knife to her own throat before driving the victims to an unoccupied friend's house to die.

The victims were treated at Antelope Valley Hospital for moderate though non life-threatening injuries and released to custody of Department of Children's Services.

3. They're OK...
She did not succeed in killing any of them, including herself.

Horrible thing for any mother to do.

She is behind bars with one million dollars bail.

15. Some of the fault....
lies with the media who took a weird story on the edges of religion made by an 89 yr. old man and gave it legs. Only a few hundred people would have heard this insane prediction if the media had not made it front page "news". When will we learn that media is about money and not information and treat it as any other capitalist enterprise?

40. On my local NBC station in Ohio, the news was reporting on this like "War of the Worlds" shit
If my husband and I hadn't known the Rapture was coming, we'd have thought something alarming was really happening! The way they were reporting on it was in a real-time, "this is what is going to happen" scenario with maps of earthquakes and other natural events. A channel surfer wouldn't have been privy to the context.

You forgot the ego factor. If everything is in some state of emergency, it makes those preparing for it look wiser, better and righteous. Suddenly, the duped have a serious purpose to pursue.

Pure self-serving ego...

24. To make it worse the whole "rapture" thing isnt even in the bible -
yes there are cryptic stuff in the book of Revelations but folks need to remember (and few churches even teach revelations except the real hard core fundie ones) that book was written by a guy named John who was pissed off at the Romans and totally insane after spending a lifetime alone on an island LMAO. I guess the fascination comes in because it's the creepiest part of the whole bible.

But so many books are missing. Like the Book of Mary which makes her an apostle as important as any of the other ones and never a prostitute. When the men decided which books belonged in the KJV they deliberately left that one out. (it's in the Gnostic)

I've done my own theological studies and basically an atheist bordering on agnostic. More pagan than anything else.

Cheers
Sandy

27. ((((FIRE))))
*Crowded theater*

Oh it was just a harmless prank, I didn't mean for anyone to get hurt or killed.

Same difference, kind of, except that these people are so terrified of living through the trials and tribulations of the apocalypse that they will resort to drastic measures such as killing their own families BECAUSE of idiots like that stupid old man that take advantage of a belief and then intentionally and knowingly work gullible people into a panicked overdrive state.

And I bet that woman would NOT have attempted to kill her children or herself if it weren't for that fool spewing his garbage.

Doesn't matter if he 'wanted' this or not. He helped bring it on and I wonder how many other stories like this are out there? And how many succeeded?

32. Reckless endangerment?
Or maybe misdemeanor/felony incitement to riot/panic?

Although... Camping apparently BELIEVED in his rapture analysis, whereas the person presumably yelling FIRE in the crowded theater example is doing so falsely -- that is, the person does not believe that there is a fire, but is causing alarm for some other motive.

I understand what you're saying and that does make sense. It does seem like he should be responsible on some level but maybe he really isn't or shouldn't be. The mother made a decision and now she will have to suffer the consequences of her beliefs and her actions.

Personally, I think adults should be able to leave a theater peacefully in times of danger. We all had fire drills in school.

Inciting stupidity causing death and the incitement of murder should be punishable by total incarceration till death do him part this mortal coil.

He like all of his ilk, is destroying civilization and turning it into a zombie march to the cliff that falls into Hades, the abyss of stupidity.

He is not forgiven; nor are those stupid enough to believe what he has to spew out.

All musings aside, there are ways to prosecute this man for gross and careless incitement to suicide and murder and putting many into destitution.

If any who now can wake up after giving away all they ever had should sue this very rich bastard for negligent whatever.

You can bet your bottom dollar he did not give away any of his vast wealth, before this rapture he so fervently and ruthlessly. This vicious old windbag led his believers to ruin; he had to know in his heart the sun'll come up tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow.

No he is not forgiven nor given any benefit of the doubt, because he has done this before. Fuk'n asshole.

37. How Disgusting
Now we'll have a court case that costs millions at the expense of rational people. If she wants to "Rapture" herself let her. Just not her kids.

We have to stop being tolerant of these cults - aka religion. We have to stop being "polite" because it's "other people's faith." Well other people's faith is killing people and we have to say stop. There is no reason I should be required to respect your ignorance.

The Christian version is no better than the Muslim version. If you want to say Islam is a violent religion let's talk about the Crusades and Inquisition. In fact, let's talk about Israel and Palestine. That's a bit more recent.

People who have "faith" divorce themselves from reality. Their "God" always absolves them from whatever atrocities they do because "HE" told them to do it. I can't remember who it was but some philosopher said something like "the faithful are the most dangerous because of their certainty their God has instructed them. There is NOTHING they won't do the serve Him."

I'm disgusted because if people who claim to have "faith" actually practiced what their "holy books" told them this would be such a better world. But it seems they never practice what they preach.
