Maybe this is one of those only tangentially related videos EarlG is talking about in the instructions to this forum. Maybe. I'm working on an essay about Belafonte in the context of Obama's critics and it occurred to me that this song was the very first piece of feminist propaganda that I ever heard. The album came out in 1956. When I was trying to learn English as a toddler, I learned it partly from the album "Calypso", one of the few records we had at home.



Belafonte is an artist that has been decades ahead of his time, much to our benefit and in some really surprising ways.

in a hippie Dead way of course, mix in a 'Not Fade Away' and an Iko Iko and the crowd will dance till they drop - love it

2. This guy was just drop dead brilliant and hilarious

and I've no idea how he was allowed to exist in the 50s or early 60s but every family that I knew had that album in their record rack.
