Secretary of Defense Robert Gates in his first interview since the killing of Osama bin Laden. Katie Couric also traveled with the secretary on a five-day mission to the Middle East that included a stop in Iraq.

Describing Obama's decision to go after Bin Laden 'I worked for a lot of these guys (Presidents) and this is one of the most courageous calls/decisions that I think I've ever seen a President make...it was a very gutsy call'

1. I watched it on "Sixty Minutes". Worth watching, IMO.
I never saw an interview with Gates before. He seems like a "good guy". He is so concerned for the soldiers and has bucked the brass at the Pentagon on excessive spending.

like it. Maybe the money for the MRAPS that he said saved thousands of soldiers came from cutting the F22.

7. I've liked Sec. Gates. In fact, he's the only member of
the Bush administration that I thought was worth a darn. He's certainly the most non-partisan. I've always thought he'd make a good president. He so calm, cool, and collected, and seems like a very decent guy.

Come on people, wake up. One of Couric's warm and fuzzy interviews with a guy running the greatest killing machine in the history of mankind. Of course they picked Couric knowing she would never ask a difficult question.

11. there's always one in the crowd
isn't there. While we watched this I thought he sounded sincere and all that. I wondered how fast it would take for someone to dismiss this interview...less than 12 hrs. Brilliant.

12. Gates is a mixed bag.
He acts like he cares about the troops. He does and says all the right warm and fuzzy things that troops appreciate but he made very little effort to do what supports the troops the most - Bring Them All Home. He's also proposed cutting vets medical benefits and increasing their co-payments annually. Yet he's against big flashy useless weapon projects.

He's the perfect Defense Secretary for Obama. Not excitable, calm, a neocon who tempers his enthusiasm for war with a little common sense, sometimes.

Katie did a nice interview. No real hard hitting questions. Sets Gates up to look good.
