2. That is by far the stupidest concept I have ever seen.
I'm not an engineer but what is this about? Build a multi billion dollar
project to move the radiation somewhere else.
I just don't get it.
Slick animation for sure.
I guess they want to build another techno miracle at some other location?
Retrieving the core is not at all practical. Why not ad concrete at the
present location. Again I just don't understand what they are trying to do
except for making money.

7. The sarcophagus is deteriorating.
It keeps further radiation releases from occurring. Chernobyl isn't 'done' yet. It is still highly dangerous. Cleanup operations are also stymied by the possibility of digging into this stuff releasing radioactive dust and steam and other material.

Worst of all, the sarcophagus could collapse. That WOULD release significant amounts of radiation, and the Ukrainian people really don't need that.

16. Herein,
is one of the primary reasons for my sarcasm: the vast majority of humans on this planet have NO IDEA how dangerous, radioactive, and downright toxic is the 'accident site' we know as Chernobyl. It will remain so for thousands of years.

I found it ironic and disheartening that this glossy, high-tech video only tangentially discloses that their workers won't be spending 'too much' time near ground zero. I wonder if the apparent construction delay is linked to this company having a difficult time finding members of the hoi polloi willing to work in such adverse conditions.

I have been opposed to 'nuclear power' since I was 17. I have participated in protests, written letters, and done a TON of research so that I can discuss nuclear technology, and defend my stance against reactors. I am saddened that my earlier post was not recognized as sheer, unadulterated sarcasm toward the corporatists who continue to act like nuclear technology is viable, and if a wee accident happens, we can just construct a big, beautiful arch to contain it.

What a load of crap.

9. boutm a dumb a response since
my brother declared that Chernobyl is totally safe to live near. (although his extreme right wing views have taken a hit after Scott Walker skewered the unions. ) If I was a blue blob on Monsters Vs Aliens. my eye would fall out. :P

6. Glad you find it amusing. The Ukrainian people do not.
The sarcophagus that was erected over the reactor to contain any further radiation release is in serious disrepair, and needs to be reinforced. Weather effects need to be kept away from the remaining, very hot corium. Further radiation releases are possible (probably unavoidable) if the sarcophagus collapses.

This cover will keep weather out of the core area, prevent widespread releases of radioactive material if any accidents occur as they clean this up, and will provide structural reinforcement for the roof of the sarcophagus.

So yeah, laugh it up.

8. You are definitely correct. However....
... my skepticism stems from the corporate entities involved. If you dig a little, you will find that one of the larger design/construction firms involved with this project is, (wait for it), Haliburton. :eyes:

10. In that case I am glad.
Russia will be footing the bill for quite a lot of this. Russians do not take kindly to being ripped off.

Halliburton will either do a good job, or they will suffer consequences they might not be used to here in the good old USA.

25. hmm...
Are you a Bart Simpson fan? Here are a few of my faves:

"Bite me." (Somewhat appropriate given your continued insistence that you know my intent behind my original post.)

"Don't have a major-league cow in the floor, man!" (That one I've altered a bit to make my own, as Bart would say 'Don't have a cow, man.' Perhaps this could help you mitigate your sanctimony. Hard to say...)

26. Nice dodge.
I don't claim to know what you 'meant' by your original post. Only that the content of your original post does not match the explanation of your 'intent'.

The rest is puerile nonsense. Plenty revealing, given the way this conversation started.

You stated an incredulous 'what', and 'hahahah' off the side of the screen.

Not really sure where sarcasm fits into that. Sounds like backpedaling to me.

20. Actually,
I considered adding parenthetically '(imagine hysterical laughter, from someone who long ago recognized the enormity of this disaster...).' However, I thought 'SURELY DUers will know.' I've since learned I should have included my disclaimer, particularly for those among us who wear their sanctimony on their sleeves.

if it were a private conversation, you would have PM'd HolyCity2012, right?

Kind of the point of a discussion forum, you see something in the thread you wish to respond to, you do.

You make strange assumptions. (Such as; people would correctly decipher your first post upthread)

11. Whether ALL of the goals are realistic or not,
The site definitely needs to be reinforced to make sure that no more radio-active material is released. We are talking a half-life of thousands of years, so IF they can safely remove this mess before it affects too many future generations, it would be terrific. Possibly, this could be an answer to the Japanese reactors also.
I doubt (since BIG money is involved and BIG profits from these "time bombs") even when they are fully functional, that they will realize what most PEOPLE have already realized, that NUCLEAR POWER IS UNSAFE and a grave danger especially as they age. That, along with our increasingly unpredictable weather patterns (global warming, IMO) makes the use of safe, green alternatives, essential (again IMO) to any thinking person.
I thought that Vann Jones, would immerse America in these alternatives. Creating thousands of American jobs and restoring America to it's technological heyday.
Of course, our President, under orders from the elite and under cover of the "outraged rethugs" caved in on this perfectly sensible goal.
