2. When there's an incumbent president and no challenger

most states don't hold a primary in that race.

On the Republican side, their winner-take-all system in their primaries means that their presidential candidate is decided a lot earlier, and their later primaries are generally meaningless, unlike what we Democrats went through in 2008. In 2012, if a lot of states don't hold Republican primaries, I'm inclined to think it will hurt them as their voters will feel cheated of an opportunity to help select their nominee. But it may not make as much difference as we'd like to think.
