David: Before we break real quick, John Boehner, who has made... John Boehner and his Republican friends have made a big deal out of transparency in this new Congress. Well, apparently, this doesn't go in all cases. Back when John Boehner was upset about Americans getting affordable health care, remember that whole thing? He would complain about the lack of transparency in the process. Don't let Democrats in Washington take this debate away from you. Don't let them make this about arm-twisting and backroom deals.
Well, he got an opportunity to actually increase transparency. C-SPAN sent him a letter. They offered to move forward in an improvement with C-SPAN coverage of the House. Up until now, and it's going to continue, there were two shots in the House, there was kind of this wide shot, and then a head-on shot of the person speaking. You couldn't really see what was going on around them, you don't really get a feel for what is actually happening in the House of Representatives. C-SPAN said let us do more. Let's increase coverage, we will increase transparency, we will give people more of an idea of what is going on in the House of Representatives. Well, Boehner's office is saying no, we're just not going to do it.
Louis: No surprise there. Just like John Boehner doesn't want the people to know what types of legislation he's passing. All he talks about is creating jobs and cutting spending, and in the meantime, all he's doing is passing legislation that has to do with abortions and, you know, stuff that...
David: Redefining rape, and...
Louis: Redefining rape, and just all, you know, his social agenda.
David: And trying to repeal health care 10, 12 times. The quote is, "The House is best served by the current system of televised proceedings provided by the House Recording Studio."
I can understand why John Boehner wouldn't want cameras in there, because back in June of 1995, he was walking around the House floor handing out tobacco checks to other Republican congressmen. He handed out about six of these from political action committees of tobacco company Brown and Williamson Corporation to fellow Republicans on the floor of the House. According to his chief of staff, they were trying to help guys who needed to get their June 30th numbers up, their cash-on-hand numbers up. All leadership does this. Let's go to break. I think we all know why John Boehner doesn't want more cameras in there, because he doesn't want to be seen handing out tobacco lobby checks to other Republicans. www.DavidPakman.com, back after this with David Silverman.
