I know, I know ... it's a commercial. But the endorsement of Detroit -- and of American workers in general -- is striking.

18. commercials were rather disappointing this year.
What a waste of money. The Bud light/dog one was the best. This one.... not good with the rap edge. Another reason not to by that brand.

71. Back when I was working in Detroit-
I was driving home one day and came upon the usual traffic backup- car stalled in the left lane. Something told me they weren't from the area and I stopped to help. they were either going to get robbed or run over. They ended up being 3 engineers from Spain on their way to Chrysler headquarters in Auburn Hills for a meeting. I happened to live in Auburn Hills at the time and gave them a ride to the front doors. We had a nice talk about Chrysler cars while driving the 30 miles north in my Olds.

But yeah, people from Michigan are very friendly, trustful and helpful. We like meeting new people and experiencing different cultures.

AWESOME! LOVED IT! GREAT BOOST FOR MY HOME TOWN!
It's really cool that an Italian-owned company would support ads that cheer for hometown America and the Detroit legacy. If only the Americans - especially those who wrap themselves in the flag and keep talking about the constitution - claiming to be so damned patriotic - would get behind and support American automakers and Detroit by actually buying the product, instead of bashing them all the time.

Super Bowl Ad Tracker: Chrysler, Eminem proclaim Detroit is still alive
Comments (0) (235) (25)
February 6, 2011 | 7:11 pm

This 2-minute long Chrysler ad during the Super Bowl wasn't so much a promotion for a new model; it was an editorial in defense of a beleaguered Detroit and, perhaps, a withering philosophy of what America is about.

Eminem, a Detroit native, returns for his second spot of the night in what is a magnificent tribute to the city that has been plagued by all the ills that an urban area could possibly face. And it's a message to stay strong.

In a way, it's also more than a message about Detroit. As BMW also showed in an ad featuring the plant making its X3 model, it's honoring a time when America was about making things -- real, hulking tangible pieces of machinery. It stood in contrast to the rest of the ads for things we click on, things made far, far away, things created by people sitting behind a desk (not that there's anything wrong with that).

Chrysler seems to say that Detroit isn't dead, and maybe the spirit of Americans making things isn't dead either.

-- Rick Rojas

that the CEO's were allowed to fire the people who earned a living wage. Then replace them with workers at about 1/3 of the money, while the CEO's were "earning" record bonuses to do it.....I hope the "hottest fires make the hardest steel."

28. Yes, it was a good ad BUT will Detroit come back? It's not exactly utopia now, and far too many of
the jobs necessary to sustain the city have been shipped to other countries. If the ad helps to make Detroit a better city, then more power to it.

40. If
You want the Detroit of the 1940s and 1950s, no it won't come back in that image. When a city loses a half a million citizens to the suburbs, it will be greatly changed. But many of the kids/grandkids of those who fled the city, are starting to come back. They are tired of living far out with nothing around them. They see Detroit as chance to make a real difference. It is wide open to those who want to come here and affect the change.

30. I liked the use of what seems to be a WPA mural in the background
And the Art Deco vibe in general. It's a dog-whistle, if you will, to anyone who still values FDR and the New Deal.

And on some level, it doesn't matter whether Chrysler-the-corporation actually lives up to what's projected in the ad. These things take on a life of their own -- like the 1984 Apple ad -- and the message of this one is a killer.

42. Rivera murals
The murals at the DIA are called "Detroit Industry" and were completed in 1933 by Rivera with heavy imput from his wife, Frida Kahlo. They were paid for by Edsel Ford. The right hated them - some wanted them destroyed. They are of huge scale and are on all four walls of a very large gallery. Rivera considered them his finest work.

I've only known of the Rockefeller Center mural by Rivera that was destroyed after Nelson Rockefeller objected because it included an image of Lenin. (http://www.diego-rivera.org/rockefellercontroversy.html)

I didn't know he'd done more work in the US. That makes it even more of a subversive subtext in the ad.

48. my hope is that the USA launches a massive infrastructure rebuilding plan
Edited on Mon Feb-07-11 12:13 PM by stockholmer
combined with a labour/trade policy that delinks from the suicidal 'absolute advantage' model of free trade instead of the 'comparative advantage' model that is practiced here in Northern Europe. A large part of this is a complete overhaul of the secondary eduction system, with a lot more emphasis placed on high-tech manufacturing trade schools (a government/privet enterprise partnership).

70 to 80% of all innovations in manufacturing occur during the scaling-up process, and this is whet is lost when you ship the factories overseas.
It is huge reason why China will sign contracts with multi-national firms to buy their products, but which require a factory to be built in China as a conditionality. In this way they create culture of innovation, which is what America has lost lost at a now multi-generational level.

Instead of spending over $1 trillion + a year on empiric war spending, the USA needs to build up a nation-wide high-speed mag lev rail system, dismantle the suburban-sprawl city-planning model that is so dependent on petrol-fuels, fix the decaying support structures, and look for huge innovations in long suppressed/ignored alternative energy sources such s hydrogen cells, fusion, and next generation battery technology.

Finally, end all bailouts of banks and financial institutions. Abolish the notion of too big to fail; JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs, Citibank, Wells Fargo and other Wall Street zombie banks are insolvent and must be seized by the FDIC for chapter 7 liquidation, with derivatives eliminated by triage. Re-institute the Glass-Steagall firewall to separate banks, brokerages, and insurance. Ban credit default swaps and adjustable rate mortgages. To generate revenue and discourage speculation, levy a 1% Tobin tax (securities transfer tax or trading tax) on all financial transactions including derivatives, stocks, bonds, foreign exchange, and commodities, especially program trading, high-frequency trading, and flash trading.

55. I agree
Here's what I heard in that ad:

"We f**ked over this proud city to make ourselves rich. Now that we've broken them, we'll throw them a bone or two and exploit those bones to sell cars to the American people ... but that won't change our basic 'screw the working man to maximize our riches' policy."

I'd be very interested in Michael Moore's reaction to that ad.

That yes, it is a city in decline, but that it isn't exactly the Pripyat that it's occasionally being described as.

Even if the place has its share of problems (and then some), I can respect people from there pushing back against the idea that it's already dead.

The man has had troubles, but though he might not be to your taste he's at the top of an art form that is powerful and thriving. I've always liked him and I'm really happy he, and Detroit, got that chance to honor a place that's been the working heart of America for a long, long time.

Like, here's the product....here's us being funny...obviously we hope you buy the product because you associate it with funny.

Or, here's the product, please buy it.

This was here's the product, if you're a good American you will want to buy this product. Or if you don't love Detroit, don't buy this product.

57. It had me at hello.
Why doesn't the Obama Administration talk more about how loans to huge, troubled businesses like the auto industry (which everyone criticized at the time) are bearing such great fruit?

68. Big K & R
I love my 300C that we got in '05. It has had one new set of tires and one battery. That's it. It was built in Canada which is union.
We support unions. I do miss Eminem's white hair though.

70. It did what an ad is supposed to do.
It created buzz. It pulled at the emotions. It succeeded in impressing the Chrysler brand on the viewer's consciousness.

I have never been to Detroit, but my hat is off to the city and its residents for their loyalty and determination.

It made me glad I drive a Chrysler.

74. It will sell cars and help Detroit's image but it did not help the American auto industry.
If I were Ford I would not be happy about having my products associated with Detroit. Detroit has too many negative association to fix with a two minute commercial. Imported from California would be a much easier sell. I would move my designers and engineers to the west coast.

77. was the "Fox" sign at the theater a symbol? If so, it wasn't made clear
but it was somewhat clever. Or am I reading in too much?

81. It has no political or business connection to THAT Fox (Newscorp).
Edited on Mon Feb-07-11 10:02 PM by Denninmi
Not anymore. It has a historic connection -- it was one of five Fox Theaters built in the 1920's by William Fox, who started the Fox movie studio in 1915. Which grew into the Fox we all know and love (puke and gag) today once good old Ruppert bought it.

It has been owned by Detroit's Illitch family (Little Caeser's Pizza, Detroit Tigers, Detroit Red Wings) since the 1980's.
