23. Sorry to dissapoint you...

but the USSR did win the Space Race. Not only did they send the first satellite into space but also the first man in orbit(Yuri Gagarin.) There were dozens of other smaller "firsts" for USSR(first woman in space, first space walk, first space station, etc...) but that's beside the point.

What USA did win is the "Moon race", but I have heard some Americans claim that getting to the moon somehow constituted winning the space race. It's pointless to argue. No one ever set the "official space race rules" :) so to each his own I guess...

Regarding Palin's remarks - An 84 kg metal ball with antennas definitely did not collapse the Soviet Union :) Nor did the space race as a whole. What it did create was an entire generation of engineers, scientists, mathematicians, and other academics that still contribute to the progress of science and technology around the world. If you check your local university, there's a good chance at least one of the math/science professors is from Russia (or former republics.)
