5. The Difference Between Metaphor and Description

In discussing the political use of language and imagery, metaphorical images such as scope or sight crosshairs lose their ambiguity when accompanied by more specific descriptors like "reloading" and "knocking off" opponents (Townhall.com), or "sniper" (BusinessInsider.com). Additional descriptors serve to exclude the other possible activities that could serve as referents of the primary image or term of the metaphor; in this case, crosshairs would be an ambiguous image pertaining to at least shooting, surveying or use of scientific scopes. But you don't reload or knock anyone off when you engage in surveying or scientific research. So once those terms are included, that eliminates the other possible interpretations of the image besides shooting, and changes the metaphor into a description.

I saw the entire interview and much of his show before and after this, and he was desperate to look "fair and balanced", repeatedly playing the false equivalency game. I appreciate the fact that Bill was allowed to say what needed to be said, but this is only because Cooper is trying not to look like the Fox-lite host that he truly is.
