Johanna Fernandez, professor and producer of the film Justice on Trial, points out that prisons have become a big business in the U.S.--an answer to deindustrialization.

Another reason why there's so many people in prison is that they are pulling people out of the cities and putting them in rural areas so they can count their heads in the census and get more political power to small populations.

This is a conversation the country needs to have and the perfect time to start it is this year during re-districting.

I was thinking about this last night during Keith Olbermann's show when he's was talking about the 3/4 human politics of early America.

The south was counting slaves in the census so they could increase their political power even though slaves couldn't vote. They are during the EXACT same thing today but they're using prisoners instead!

I'm so glad Glenn Beck brought this subject up. LET'S TALK ABOUT IT!
