CENK: "So, why are we focusing on Iran - it's 'oh, my god, we got to attack Iran! etc. etc.' - when it turns out that the guys that are financing the terror are the Saudis and Qatar and the Persian Gulf states?"

TRITA PARSI: "I think that's a great question and a question a lot of people in Washington should be asking themselves, not to say that Iran does not constitute a problem, that it does not constitute a significant challenge..."

Cenk Uygur (host of The Young Turks) on MSNBC Live speaks with and professor Juan Cole and Trita Parsi of the National Iranian American Council on the Wikileaks revelations on the Middle East and potential war with Iran.

10. Tom, please pass on my comments below to Cenk
He needs to fix this asap. The meme has already started to spread: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x9654448

11. I already did.
I'm personally very removed from this particular topic and specifically your strong point of contention so I have no ground to comment one way or the other, for the record.

12. Thanks man.
I understand and didn't want to have a debate about it. The thing is, I know how much honesty matters to Cenk.

2. Anyone got a link to the cable which says Qatar are financing terrorists?
Edited on Tue Nov-30-10 01:15 AM by Turborama
It's really unfair to accuse a country of doing something so wrong without anything to back it up. That's the sort of thing Bush's Junta used to do.

Thanks in advance...

3. It comes from the NYTimes synopsis:
Edited on Tue Nov-30-10 02:42 AM by Hissyspit
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/11/29/world/29cables.html?_r=1&hp

¶ Mixed records against terrorism: Saudi donors remain the chief financiers of Sunni militant groups like Al Qaeda, and the tiny Persian Gulf state of Qatar, a generous host to the American military for years, was the “worst in the region” in counterterrorism efforts, according to a State Department cable last December. Qatar’s security service was “hesitant to act against known terrorists out of concern for appearing to be aligned with the U.S. and provoking reprisals,” the cable said.

4. Even in that synopsis there's nothing about them FUNDING terrorists, which is what Cenk said
Edited on Tue Nov-30-10 02:07 AM by Turborama
I wrote an OP a year ago about how Bush and Rumsfeld made up shit like this when they literally went to war against Al Jazeera: http://journals.democraticunderground.com/Turborama/84

TYT should take this video down and Cenk should make an on air apology to Qatar.

5. He may be conflating Saudi financing with Qatar lack of cooperation on counterterrorism.
Edited on Tue Nov-30-10 02:28 AM by Hissyspit
Which I thought was curious and why I put Qatar in the headline. I can't seem to locate the cable with the specific quote.

6. He has to be extremely careful when talking about such serious matters
Edited on Tue Nov-30-10 02:27 AM by Turborama
Especially if it's live TV. No room for errors when it comes to matters like this. However, if an error is made it should be admitted and the appropriate apologies made asap.

If he (or anyone else in the media) doesn't have the actual cable, he (they) should wait until he does (they do) and shouldn't say anything until then.

ETA No offense to you intended, but I'm hiding this thread now because I'm really pissed off and disappointed. I thought our guys were more careful than Faux etc.

7. K&R. Our guys are way more
careful than Fox News. Fox News intentionally misleads, exaggerates and falsifies "news".

And what we occasionally do is make mistakes. It's how we deal with them afterwards that makes the difference between us and them.
