Keith Olbermann talks with law professor Jonathan Turley about a piece in the conservative Daily Telegraph where Boris Johnson, Mayor Of London, advises George W. Bush not to bring his book tour to Britain, because he could face arrest as a war criminal.

George W. Bush can’t fight for freedom and authorise torture
If the West’s aim is to spread the rule of law, it cannot be achieved by vile means, argues Boris Johnson.

By Boris Johnson

It is not yet clear whether George W Bush is planning to cross the Atlantic to flog us his memoirs, but if I were his PR people I would urge caution. As book tours go, this one would be an absolute corker. It is not just that every European capital would be brought to a standstill, as book-signings turned into anti-war riots. The real trouble — from the Bush point of view — is that he might never see Texas again.

One moment he might be holding forth to a great perspiring tent at Hay-on-Wye. The next moment, click, some embarrassed member of the Welsh constabulary could walk on stage, place some handcuffs on the former leader of the Free World, and take him away to be charged. Of course, we are told this scenario is unlikely. Dubya is the former leader of a friendly power, with whom this country is determined to have good relations. But that is what torture-authorising Augusto Pinochet thought. And unlike Pinochet, Mr Bush is making no bones about what he has done.

Unless the 43rd president of the United States has been grievously misrepresented, he has admitted to authorising and sponsoring the use of torture. Asked whether he approved of “waterboarding” in three specific cases, he told his interviewer that “damn right” he did, and that this practice had saved lives in America and Britain. It is hard to overstate the enormity of this admission.

“Waterboarding” is a disgusting practice by which the victim is deliberately made to think that he is drowning. It is not some cunning new psych-ops technique conceived by the CIA. It has been used in the dungeons of dictators for centuries. It is not compatible either with the US constitution or the UN convention against torture. It is deemed to be torture in this country, and above all there is no evidence whatever that it has ever succeeded in doing what Mr Bush claimed. It does not work.

You know what I read? The mayor in London who's warning Bush is actually a conservative himself, which should tell you about the problems that Bush should face!

7. A conservative in England
or in any other European country, for that matter, is to the left of the most liberal person over here. This is why 'liberalism' in this country is a sick joke - like everything else. If liberals over here stood up like the lefties try to do I believe we wouldn't have been in the mess we find ourselves in.

20. It would be wonderful to see . . .
smug smirky former President Junior cuffed and perp walked. Maybe he could cut a deal by testifying against Cheyney and all the rest of these tough-talking advocates of legalized atrocity.

14. So are you sayin' that we ain't a "Nation Of Laws" as advertised?
Not the "Leader of the "Free World" or the "Beacon Of Freedom"? No longer able to bitch about "Human Rights" when ruthless dictators, despots, scumbags and unitary executives around the world torture and murder unarmed POWs?

Wait until some country captures one of our soldiers, waterboards him and watch the world literally laugh at us when we denounce it as "against international humanitarian law."

39. that's it right there and what is the most frustrating when trying to explain WHY torture is bad....
you are just guaranteeing that it will be done to OUR soldiers.... then everyone will be screaming bloody murder. it's ok for US to do it but no one else. but that is bullshit. we can't do whatever we want to others and expect that we will be treated differently.

5. More than anything else
the fact that they even considered the use of torture tells us what kind of people comprised the Bush cabal. These are people that should not have even be placed in control of a major city government, let alone the most powerful nation on earth. Evidence? Just look at the results of eight years of these sociopathic policies. They destroyed the nation.

If Bush is never punished for his misdeeds can we at least forever tarnish his name in history? For Christ's sake, there are millions of people that worship the ground this man walks on. These people need a reality check.

9. President Obama needs to step up to the plate
President Obama needs to have his Attorney General and his Justice Department file arrest warrants against Bush, Cheney, and Rumsfeld AS A START to a deeper investigation of who and what allowed this to happen. Germany is right, if they allow Bush or Cheney on their soil bragging about the torture they approveed they would be hypocrites. I hope the whole world feels that way and is just keeping quiet so they can spring their trap as soon as Bush lands on their soil.
But truthfully, this "We just want to move forward" attitude from the President Obama has me perplexed. I know he has had his hands full trying to bring about financial stability in this country but I hope he decides to change his mind and walk these criminals handcuffed to the nearest jail and proceed with a war crimes trial.

Wel, then I hope mr Bush are indeed taking a stroll to London UK.. And then been busted for his crimes. And when, then I hope UK are doing the work, US should have been doing the day after mr Bush was out of office. To let him go around, and many others like him brag about how he desided that torture was okay - and that it posible was far worse than he wil ever admit, after all, waterboarding are not torture by his standard.. He had admited to crimes, now its time to prosecute the son of ****** (whatever you want to say about him)

And as others have pointed out.. Pinochet also belived to be over the law, and was arrested and put into house arrest for 6 months, before he was playing ailing and sick, and it was desided it was better he was leaving for home, rather than die on UK soil.. And not that long after he died indeed... Hope he ended up in some of the deepest corners of hell after he wake up!. Mr Bush are in good healt at least, and should surive a couple of months in UK prison I guess.. He might se the inside of the International Criminal Cort in Haag Holland too if he is really lucky..

No, I doubt he wil leave for europe anytime soon, specially not Western Europe, where we for the most part still are country's of LAWS..

Not legal. I hear he didn't ask his legal team if it was legal as he stated in the video but instead ordered his legal team to make it legal, which is why some of them resigned. You make it legal for me, or you're out of a job.

about the possibility prosecution until he dies. The mood of this country could and probably will change in the future. Whether it changes to the point of prosecuting Bush, et als, is something none of us can accurately predict now. The future is a blank sheet of paper that hasn't been written yet (I presume).

25. I would imagine
Had the Obama administration done its duty, and arrested the Bush cabal at the start, we would have had a more fearful Republican party, that their crap, the kind of stuff they are doing now, would NOT be tolerated. We probably would not have heard "You Lie" spoken at the State of the Union address.

To hell with what the Repukes/Teabaggers think. They hate him anyway! He needs to set things right with the rest of the world and his supporters at home. In one move like that, he could fix America's reputation. There's a LAW, since 1994, that says Cheney and Bush are War Criminals. They ARE. They should be arrested NOW.

If Mayor Of London really wanted Bush he would have not said anything about arresting him for torture and would indeed have invited him over and then.... Maybe he could have said he wanted to give Bush an award of some kind. Maybe the Canadian PM could do this.

41. I find it fascinating that President Obama finds it politically inconvenient
to try under well established law admitted and known torturers.

The fact that he can ignore their crimes says a lot about who Obama is.

If the crimes of the bushes had been prosecuted, President Obama would not have to worry about any RepubliCON right now. Instead, we watch him day after day as he kowtows to these criminals.
