Young conservative book panel becomes awkward confrontation between exes

A C-SPAN2 discussion spiraled into one man's angry tirade against his National Review-contributor ex-girlfriend Video

Normally, one would not expect great entertainment from a panel discussion, aired on C-SPAN2, made up of contributors to a new Jonah Goldberg-edited collection of essays by young conservative writers. But great entertainment is just what Book TV's six viewers got when panelist Todd Seavey leveled bizarre accusations against -- and unloaded years worth of simmering resentment on -- his co-panelist and ex-girlfriend Helen Rittelmeyer.

Here, from the Daily Caller, is a partial transcript:

Seavey: I probably should confess that Helen and I dated for two years, so we’ve sparred about many things. It might come as a surprise to some of you that we dated for two years, not just because we have ideological differences, but because there are probably some people in this room who also dated Helen during those two years, given how tumultuous it got. It was sort of on again, off again.

Rittelmeyer: “I’m in favor of combativeness.”

Seavey: “And, at at times her gamesmanship would include even coldly saying that she was gonna play matchmaker and set up a couple and then seduce the man away to play with his mind and hurt the woman, which when you think about it is pretty creepy. Kinda disturbing.

Rittelmeyer: “Is all this going on CSPAN?”

Sarah Palin's daughter is the role model for the New Conservatives, have a baby (or two) and get separated, resume the relationship, have the guy insult your mother and fool around, and break it off completely.

Family values.

75. I was wondering. What does this Catholic woman do with a man
once she has "seduced him" to mess with his mind and hurt his girl friend?

Who would be so crazy about such a cold, hateful young woman -- only a masochist.

This woman is not capable of a loving, giving, sharing relationship.

And if that man were capable of a loving, giving, sharing relationship, he would not be a right-wing conservative.

14. Both of them have a personal appearance which makes them look like thrwobacks to the early 1960's.
The hair, the clothes, the conservatism (at least on her part) are all reminiscent of 1962 mainstream, conventional people. They're eerily similar to Ward and June Cleaver in many ways. For those two years that they dated, they probably slept in separate beds!

I kept expecting one of them (probably her) to use the word, "beatnik" or maybe "hippie" - though "hippie" was invented a couple years after '62 (I think).

Glad I missed the whole discussion and I'm not happy that I wasted 5 minutes on the clip presented here - and then two more minutes typing THIS!

I'm out.

17. When I was in college, all those many years ago, I investigated
the ideas of the extreme right (Ayn Rand, etc.) as well as those of the extreme left (Marx, Engels, and even Trotsky). I rejected them all because I found, as this man explains, that in each case, they were cruel. They just wanted people to suffer.

That is when I decided to be a liberal. I would like to have a world in which there is less anger and suffering.

I can't figure out how that young woman could seduce any man who wasn't a masochist to begin with. But, then, maybe all of her boyfriends are masochists. Could explain a lot about conservatives.

...conservative men have boners over the likes of Palin, O'Donnell, and Bachmann? If this young woman is what they have to resort to for dates, the Witchy Women (or twitchy women in Bachmann's case) are the reason that Teabaggers are drooling. In the real world, they have to pork creepy girls with glasses that can see microbes.

Edited on Tue Oct-19-10 04:30 PM by JDPriestly
If the workers' state is so inevitable, why is it almost always necessary to have a violent revolution to install it in power?

I do not like the inevitable violence that is a part of Marxism in the real world.

I also do not like the violence of fascism.

And I do not like the violence in our society.

I do believe that we could have a far less violent society and live better as a result.

This was way more interesting than what I thought it would be from the title. The dude basically calls out this bitch for being a ridiculous Ayn-Rand loving, libertarian weirdo, and he does it by using some personal stories from when they were dating. The chick is way egotistical and holier-than-though so its great to see this guy immediately call her out.

We know the latter is untrue, but did the former strike anyone? I always thought conservatives considered themselves "the norm" and the majority and liberals are supposed to be freaks of nature.

That said, I only found it uncomfortable for a few sentences and he really destroyed her, and she denied none of it (at least in this clip, I'll have to look for what happened next).

She admits that she wants to increase suffering. Young Republican ideed.

36. Conservative intellectuals are a strange breed
They have nurtured a deep sense of wounding for several generations, ever since the activism of the 1960's, when their intellectual grandfathers felt threatened by anti-war and civil rights protests, especially those that occupied buildings. They feel their minority status in the world of letters quite deeply.

They also live in a world so insulated by foundation money and so remote from the real world of human beings that they can talk about things such as the need to increase human suffering without irony.

50. They assume (correctly) that they will be cared for.
The have health insurance, and they often have rich donors. If they are successful shilling for corporate interests, they'll be allowed to live inside of the comfortable conservative womb for the duration of their lives.

The really strange conservatives are the poorer, uninsured, psuedo intellectual types. Spending their time rereading Ayn Rand and Nietzsche endlessly. Powerless rubes who imagine themselves to be supermen. That is, until the universe finally says "No", and they end up with the health or financial problems that strike most people. Or old age takes them, and they fade into the night with a whimper.

77. I have a feeling that once this video makes the rounds on YouTube
and e-mail, this young lady is going find out just how it feels to suffer enough to build some character.

At the least, she will probably want to change her hairstyle or put on a burka so that she won't be immediately recognized on the street.

What self-respecting man would talk to her, much less date her after they have seen this video?

She did not deny anything that her ex-boyfriend said. She did not cry. She seemed to acknowledge the truth of his statements. Very strange.
