This Paladino ad has his supporters talk. It is from the Paladino campaign itself - it is his ad, in his Youtube channel. Throughout the video, his supporters continually bust on New York City, and even all of downstate (NYC, Long Island, Westchester and Rockland - some people consider Orange, Putnam and Dutchess as downstate as well).

Is this some kind of strategy for Paladino? 19 million people live in New York State. Over 8 million live in New York City. Over 2.7 million live out on Long Island. About 1 million people live in Westchester. Is this a strategy, for the 8.3 million or less people who live upstate to bust on the 11.7 million or more who live downstate?

And to boot, I have lived in upstate New York, and met very few people who hate downstate. People who live in Syracuse or Rochester or in the Catskills or along the Hudson are generally nice people who don't spend their days fuming with hatred over "downstate".

2. That woman who blames taxes for her inability to get a job is typical
Teabaggers always look to blame others for their own ineptitude.

3. Downstate / Upstate
As a former downstater, now a midstater I do spend time defending downstate to people in my area. That is where most of the population is.

I have heard people refer to Westchester as upstate. When you live near Albany, that's not upstate! (I guess everything else is upstate)

4. I have lived upstate and downstate.
Most in Long Island consider Dutchess upstate. Even though Syracuse is actually the center of the state, they consider that "North Country". In Poughkeepsie, they considered Albany "upstate". Most had heard of Buffalo but not so much Syracuse or gasp! St. Lawrence or Watertown.

I took a work trip with a coworker who considered New Rochelle NYC. I think I said something like-- "you're sounding like a hick-- this is New Rochelle, not The City". I also had to talk her down when crossing the Tappan Zee.

Upstate, we refer to the city as the city we live closest too. Downstate-- no matter what city we live close to-- Newburgh, Kingston, Yonkers, Scranton,-- the city is always The City-- NYC.

Many people who live in upstate NY feel underrepresented in Albany. Most of the power guys in Albany are from downstate and in the last few years are infatigueably corrupt such as Pedro Espada, Hiram Monserrate, Malcolm Smith, Joe Bruno (from upper state), Alan Hevesi etc. It's getting to the point that the retirement plan for a NYS politician is state prison. Plus we have these wealthy developers always thinking they can run the government better and when they fail, just try to buy it like Golisano did and now this asshole Paladino.

Meanwhile the issues that concern people who live upstate like the NYRI and Fracking -- basically the ruin of our environment and towns-- these issues seem to take a backseat -- particularly if NYC needs it. Having a city like NY as part of your state can be both a blessing and a curse.

5. Old, white & stupid is no way to go through life.
"New York City" & "downstate" are code words for "those lazy, shiftless, good-for-nothing brown people".

When Carl says he's mad as hell, he's announcing his psychological state.

Voters are angry - and they should be. But anyone who votes Republican because of that are mad at the wrong people.
