The huge DoD budget plus the war supplemental and then $50 more billion on top of that? Maybe that's why Defense Secretary Gates knew nothing about the request for an additional $50 bil. Bush threw it in at the last minute so the Dems could balk at that and not the rest of the funding bill. If the Dems refuse to authorize the $50 bil. and still approve the rest of the funding request, Bush still gets what he wanted, the dems come out looking as if they stood up to Bush, and the long debate over that additional $50 bil. gives Bush leverage to veto the $22 billion for social programs, and the occupation continues in spite of it not accomplishing anything besides emptying our treasury and getting Bush closer to attacking Iran. That's what the additional $50 billion is for...attacking Iran... which Gates is being kept in the dark about also. Gates was surprised at the $50bil request and he would know if it were needed...unless...he didn't figure in an attack on Iran as part of the budget("Hey Cheney, how much is attacking Iran going to cost initially?" "Oh, about $50billion Mr. President")
It's like selling a car that you only want $10,000 for so you ask for $15 plus an additional $2 grand for repairs and title transfer etc. After haggling over price for an hr. you agree to pay the $2000 for the fees and maybe knock a thousand off the price still getting far more than what you needed to get.
Why did gates not know about the additional $50bil since it's his budget? He was surprised when told Bush team had added it. Gates would have known if it were indeed needed. Something fishy this way comes and it's wearing a $50 billion price tag. And it could be the cost of attacking Iran budgeted another way.
