1. It's best to not say a word to police period. You should plead the 5th
stay quiet and not risk accidentally incriminating yourself even if you are Innocent. A lot of people messed up by talking to police. Martha Stewart is a perfect example. Had she stayed quiet they could not have gotten her for lying. Too often Innocent people tell the truth and it ends up putting them near the scene or they change their story just slightly and the police are then all over them. If you get taken in, don't talk at all. It's your right.

2. You don't need to plead the fifth. You just say that you have nothing to say and will
not have anything to say and that you want a lawyer.

The following is a minimal Miranda warning, as outlined in the Miranda v Arizona case. (short form)

You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. You have the right to speak to an attorney, and to have an attorney present during any questioning. If you cannot afford a lawyer, one will be provided for you at government expense.

3. Simple Flow Chart
If "Am I free to go?" is not accepted,
Then, "I'm going to remain silent. I want to speak to my attorney."

These are the only two things to say to any law enforcement official in any circumstance. That's ONLY, as in you don't say anything else. Ever.

5. I agree with your premise, but offer this alteration

1) Maintain a polite, courteous & professional attitude while interacting with an officer.
2) Openly provide only the requested information that is relevant to the situation at hand; provide absolutely no information above and beyond what is requested - especially "small talk."
3) Avoid expressing any outright hostility toward the officer, as that invokes suspicion on their part and puts your freedom & safety in jeopardy.

From personal experience - It never hurts to be overly-cautious while expressing a respect for authority when dealing with "the law," regardless of which portion of the nation you find yourself in.
