I adapted The Fugs' song "Wide Wide River" with apologies to BP following the lead of Rep. Joe Barton (R-TX). Warning: song contains profanity. And bad singing (mine). BP deserves no less.

This song goes out to the fighters! The Women of Code Pink who keep getting tossed out of the BP hearings for making noise. To the fishermens' wives like Kindra Arnesen who keep giving BP execs a piece of their minds. To the environmentalists and Greenpeace. To the animal rights activists. To the clean-up workers and those who are manning the booms. To the mom and pop stores that have been put out of business. To the media who aren't being allowed to report the news. To the scientists and engineers who are trying to stop the oil. To the people of the Gulf states that BP calls the "Little People." To the children whose beaches are closed. To all the beachcombers and vacationers who have ever called this place home. This song is for you.

Sing it loud and often in BP's honor! And please, DUers leave me comments. :)

BP's Wide, Wide River

Like a river of shit

Like a river of shit

Flow on, flow on, BP's spilling that shit

Right from my toes

On up to my nose

Flow on, flow on, like a river of shit

I've been swimming

In BP's river of shit

More oil spilling

And I'm getting tired of it

Oil well's spewing

When will it run dry

Can't go on swimming

Cause I don't want to die

You can't fry that fish when it's dead in poison water

and you can't eat that shrimp when it's boiled in bubbling crude

and you can't walk that beach with tarballs on your feet

and you can't swim that surf when the water's thick as blood

and the birds are drowning in a sea of oily mud

Our oil slick deadline is flowing closer every day

grows and grows and grows

And no one has a clue how to make it stop!

Oil of sorrow

Is covering up the Gulf

Sliding down our throats

bringing amber waves of oil

And all our children's children's children's

Children's children children

Shall have to wade swim

In the grim gulf waters

In which we now all drown

Sing along with us

Sing sing sing sing sing sing sing sing!

Like a river of shit

Like a river of shit

Flow on, flow on, BP's spilling that shit

Right from my toes

On up to my nose

Flow on, flow on, like a river of shit

I've been swimming

In BP's river of shit

More oil spilling

And I'm getting tired of it

Oil well's spewing

When will it run dry

Can't go on swimming

Cause I don't want to die

1. Dont blaim BP,. blaim yourselves, .
the gas you put in your car is produced thusly,. yup it spills and creatures die. if you have a problem with that, try to make the cause and effect relationship between gas and oil extraction,. you can not have the one with out the other! It really amazes me how many people jump on BP while lining up to put gas in their cars,. not just a rive in egypt, true that.

NOthing agianst your song/video in particular,. just venting my bile on the general subject,. . peace.

2. I don't drive more than a few miles per week
I live near work. I only drive when necessary, and I never owned a gas guzzler. I haven't driven anywhere since May. I haven't even put gas in my car since before the oil rig went down. So how is it my fault?

4. Haven't owned a car for almost ten years -
what else do you have to offer ?

Yes it is stupid, ignorant, moronic, un-caring, selfish, greedy myopic people who are to blame for this - are you one ?

I'm not.

I've been outraged since before Shell and the Niger Delta, before Coltan in the Congo, before Boganville, I was outraged in 1992 at my first world environment conference on global warming - where were you ?

Don't start pointing fingers - people have been working hard and screaming their lungs out for change - now you are finally understanding you are accusing those around you of doing nothing.

Even if you were oil dependent your argument only serves to continue using it. Perhaps it would be better to simply acknowledge the problem, admit humbly to your oil vice - and set about correcting things and encouraging others to do so.

6. Welcome to DU Aristophenia
You are so right. The hummer/SUV/suburban commuters are the ones getting on their high horses and wagging their fingers. I have seen multiple DUers vowing to decrease their carbon footprints. And for many of us this has been a lifestyle choice our whole lives. It is irksome to have anyone turn around and blame us.

I have been conserving since the Carter days of long gas lines. I made lifestyle choices accordingly while it seemed no one else around me did. That is the real nature of this problem. My consumption of oil never made BP any windfall profits. So the accusation that I am somehow to blame is ludicrous. Obviously it bothers you too!

Glad to meet someone who walks the walk and talks the talk!

5. Nobody is blaiming
Edited on Wed Jul-07-10 09:31 AM by bongbong
Liberals aren't blaiming BP, they're blaming it (him? her? personhood per the SCOTUS, AKA Supreme Corruptoids Of The US).

7. Maybe it's a word combination of blame and claim?
Kind of a hit and run post if you ask me. Probably driving an SUV to boot!
