1. Thank you RT !
How Ironic we have to get news from the Russians because we have a corporate controlled media.

3. Not a new story, just one you won't hear on Big Media...
The parallels between the US and Rome are unmistakable - and overspending on the military is a big one.

Now, if the Repubs take over Congress, their script for "recovery" will look like that described in Naomi Klein's classic, The Shock Doctrine. They will say, "we need to reboot the economy." And how they do it is with a boot to the throats of the citizens.

Read The Shock Doctrine. It's coming to a state/national capital near you.

4. 5.5 Billion going into Kabul every month
...all war dollars. Was just watching the report from Rachel Maddow who is now in Kabul.

America rots while investors and contractors in Afghanistan build their empires.

5. That's hilarious.

I find it hilarious that Russia Today (RT) doesn't show Alaska as part of the US on their map. It must still hurt their pride.

6. BTW

The report is typical garbage out of RT. Yes, the US spends way to much on defense and it needs to cut by at least 1/3 if not 1/2 just to balance the budget but the crazy far left claims of empire are just that. Crazy. As for RT, they most certainly have an agenda just like Fox Noise.

8. Why are the claims crazy ?
Edited on Wed Jul-07-10 03:32 AM by Aristophrenia
The Us fits every single definition of empire I have ever seen read? How is that crazy to assume that because the US fits the very definition of Empire - it is Empire ?

Not really sure how the US is NOT an empire - perhaps you could offer us an explanation to us crazy far let rationalists - or do you just leave it at the insult as a priori evidence.

Define that.

9. Just because we don't have an emperor doesn't mean this isn't an empire
Edited on Wed Jul-07-10 05:17 AM by mikehiggins
England didn't have an "emperor" as such but do you doubt they had an empire? They called it that themselves, for pete's sake. Later on they dressed it up with titles such as commonwealth but how did that differ from Rome?

Maybe you don't see the connection because you miss a point. WE are the subjects of the Empire, just like those brown and yellow skinned "others" around the world.

And to add a point (via edit) the US willingness to simply assassinate people who are inconvenient around the world makes one wonder about how many of our populist leaders somehow seem to end up dead before their time.

At least Romans and Roman subjects never got accused of paranoia when they said the Empire was an Empire.

7. Niall gives it 6 more years, but they still could launch WWIII
Niall Ferguson: The US Has 6 Years Before Debt Payments Surpass Defense Spending

..

“If you really want to see when an empire is getting vulnerable, the big giveaway is when the costs of serving the debt exceed the cost of the defense budget,” Ferguson said. That will happen in the United States within the next six years, he predicted.

He also warned that the US economy could unravel very quickly, a la the Soviet Union, and that there was no reason to presume it would sink slowly into the mire.
