8. Nuh uh. When did the filibuster become the law of the land?
Most often they stop us with a mere threat. They have to be called on their blackmail every single fucking time they pull it. They say filibuster, we order mattresses and water bottles.

17. Exactly, aquart. But it's going to take backbone.
The Repugnats got what hey wanted when they were in power while the Demojelly cowards shook in thier boots afraid to confront them with filibusters. Now in the majority the Dems are still afraid to confront them. What the hell are we voting for if the Dems are going to do what the GOP wants them to do anyway?

35. Problem is really it's only been used by Repugs . . . if Dems had also used it to stop
Repug legislation the Repugs would have blown it up --

Weren't they threatening to do that at one point?

My opinion on it is it's mainly been used historically to stop liberal/progressive

legislation -- 6 week debate in 1930's to stop anti-lynching laws!

Right wing also used it to hold up civil rights - didn't they?

Does anyone recall any historic use of it by anyone in Congress to keep right wing

legislation from moving?

Last vote on unemployment was 57 to 41 -- ridiculous!!

44. Yes, they did threaten to blow it up...
Edited on Sat Jun-26-10 09:52 PM by WarhammerTwo
The GOP called it the "nuclear option" saying that if Dems filibustered, they would get rid of the filibuster rule altogether. And all the right wingers cheered for the nuclear option! "Yay, nuclear option! Blow 'em to hell!" they cried. Don't ya wish they kinda did? Just so it could come back to bite them in the ass now?

What's funny, though, is when Obama and the Dems were going to use reconciliation to get heath care passed, the GOP went back into their back of tricks and pulled out the nuclear option term once again. This time it wasn't to rally the war mongering hawks in their ranks. Rather it was used to scare the piss out of McCarthyists who were already worried that no good Muslim, non-American Obama was going to reshape the country into a socialist nightmare.

Yup.

GOP: nuclear option = elimination of filibuster. Conservatives cheer and sit on their roofs looking for the mushroom cloud.

Dems: nuclear option = reconciliation. Conservatives head for the bomb shelter and cling tightly to their guns and religion.

Yeesh.

It appears it has a special exemption from the rules against broad brush smears or personal attacks. Just my personal observation since it showed up in the bash the liberals vernacular here during the HCR debate.

How many are on the list now?

Olberman, Jon Stewart, Rachel Maddow --

Michael Moore, Jane Hamsher, William Greider, Tom Hayden --

Eventually, you'll put the Constitution on the "leftbagger" list . . .

14. Love Rachel. She's the best broadcast journalist out there.
I'd like to see this list in print. Can that be arranged? It really needs to be made widely available, and then repeated over and over and over again. Obama has accomplished one hell of a lot. I may not agree with everything, or wish certain things would go faster, but overall I'd say he's done a darn good job. Can you imagine if McCain was president. With everything that's happened in this country, that's a pretty horrifying thought.

45. "trashing him" - telling facts is not trashing him. some would be wise to understand that just
because one questions actions, it is not "trashing" him. The video shows full and well the good things he's done. She won't be thrown under the bus for a while, great! The next time she questions actions by the WH, there will be plenty of tire action for her though, and that's sad. Full obedience is something only the GOP should be known for, like they did with pResident "Lil Boots".

32. I always love hearing from Rachel, but I'm older than her and
remember why so much was happening way back when that noble experiment known as prohibition was taking place 1920-1933.

By 1932, Cook County (Chicago) was firing firemen, police, and teachers (who had not been paid in 8 months). Breadlines and Hoovervilles (homeless encampments) appeared across the nation.

Those hurt the most were more stunned than angry. Many sank into despair and shame after they could not find jobs. The suicide rates increased from 14 to 17 per 100,000. Protest that did occur was local, not national: "farm holidays," neighbors of foreclosed farmers refusing to bid on farms at auction, neighbors moving evicted tenants' furniture back in, and local hunger marches.http://www.nps.gov/archive/elro/glossary/great-depression.htm
