The bottom line: Zubrin figured out how to get to Mars on NASA's existing budget by "living off the land," using Mars resources such as its atmosphere to provide oxygen and fuel for the return voyage so the whole round trip will be much less expensive and heavy. If we are already spending on NASA to build "The Space Station To Nowhere" why don't we instead go to Mars and inspire the imagination of the young as Kennedy did? It can be done in only 10 years using technology already developed.

Zubrin:
"We decided to do Mars the way Lewis and Clark did America. Use local resources. Travel light. Live off the land."
Zubrin 2:30 into the video:
“Mars is the next logical step in our space program. It's the challenge that's been staring us in the face for the past thirty years. It's the planet that's most like the Earth. It's the planet that has on it the resources needed to support life and therefore someday technological civilization.”
