In raw video, reporters claim Israelis fired on activists before boarding ship
By Stephen C. Webster
Monday, May 31st, 2010 -- 6:49 pm

Update: Turkey will reportedly send military escort with future Gaza aid boats

In what could be a serious blow to Israel's narrative on the killing of at least nine humanitarian activists making their way to Gaza through international waters, raw video by an Al Jazeera producer, who was filming during the raid, appears to provide evidence that the IDF opened fire on the flotilla even before boarding it.

Israeli forces assert they came under attack by the pro-Palestine civilian group, and video released by the IDF appears to show one soldier being tossed overboard amid a scuffle with unidentified individuals wielding melee weapons, like clubs and chairs.

However, in raw video captured by an Al Jazeera producer and published to YouTube late Monday, two journalists provide a play-by-play of the harrowing event as pops and cracks echo in the background. Even before the Israeli forces were aboard, one says, they were pelting the boat with tear gas and stun grenades, injuring numerous people.

Then he confirms the first death, saying the individual was killed by "munitions," but not specifying whether it was a bullet or something else. Then he confirms that Israeli forces were boarding the ship...

1. This is Israel's message to peace activists.
The message "We will murder you if you come trying to help any more Palestinians"

5. Yeah, kinda effs up the whole narrative that the IDF was assaulted first.
But how much do you want to bet that narrative is what we'll still be hearing all week?

7. Tell me again how the passengers attacked the commandos before they boarded.
All I saw were a mess of passengers and blood and no Israelis until the end.

I could throw in a few jokes quoting Alan Dershowitz telling how Palestinians fool the ADF but I am just too disgusted right now.

8. We shouldn't be providing Israel with any aid whatsoever.
Edited on Tue Jun-01-10 02:06 AM by Xicano
Our government should cut all aid to them. Given this and the mile long list of UN resolution violations I honestly don't see why we continue to aid them. I mean I know why our government does, but I don't "honestly" see why it does.

10. I have always supported Israel and its right to defend itself, but
this clearly appears to be in international waters and they appear to have began the attacks. If so, they must be held accountable just like any other nation.

14. Its imposable
to say they are defending them selfs when they are occupying someone else's teratory... They should leave Palestinian land and they wouldn't need to protect them selfs!
Here is a analogue. If I break into your house and you try to throw me out I don't have the rite to shoot you to quote "Protect myself" do I?

15. Actually it's very possible. That land was part of the Ottoman Empire
which sided with the Germans during World War 1. It then became a British Protectorate. The Palestinians sided with the Nazis during WW2 and Britain retook the land at the end of WW2 and a piece was carved out for Israel. It had been the Jewish homeland 3000 rears prior, so it only makes sense for them to return.

11. Regime change damnit!
We've done it before when other nations have mercilessly attacked others. It's time we do it again.

Iraq was also a former ally. Why is Israel given special treatment for that "distinction"?...

12. Well, the video is a bit confusing as to time line and events, and which came first but

I see no reason whatsoever to use live rounds of ammunition against a humanitarian vessel. NONE!

I see no reason to board these vessels in international waters. There were so many OTHER ways for Israel to have acted responsibly, and we see none of that evidence from this video.

I am also disappointed in the American pres's and media coverage of this entire event, airing the propaganda of Israel's leadership even while the people on board this ship were allowed to speak to the media. Thankfully for Youtube and other sources, including BBC, we get a clearer picture of the travesty Israel committed yesterday.

I am ashamed of the US media, even if I find this footage hard to follow and completely understand, the US media is being irresponsible in their coverage of these events.
