The man was led away, and one student was arrested for hitting a Phoenix police officer with a water bottle.

The officer was not injured.'

is an astro turf group created by corporations to look after and protect corporate interests. That's a fact. Otherwise the Tea Party would be protesting the SCOTUS Citizens United decision, but they're not. Proof enough for me.

The Arizona protesters are genuine grass roots protecting themselves from an assault on their actual citizenship. Teabaggers all pretend all the time.

But we should speak out against this just as we should the tea party protesters. If this were a video of the tea party the subject would probably say "violent" instead of "aggressive" and we'd be pejoratively calling them an angry mob and that they are using fear and intimidation. Chasing after one counter protester that the police have to escort out due to safety fears is not how you persuade the people and make your cause look like it's in the right. It also makes us look hypocritical. We should be condemning this as well. Peaceful, reasonable, and calm protesting is what's needed.

"Peaceful, reasonable, calm protesting" - know what that sounds like?

Back in the 60's, during the Civil Rights movement, blacks and their organizers were constantly told not to protest, or if they do, to follow certain pre-written guidelines. The reason being? "You'll scare the white people away."

For all intents and purposes, the people in this video have just been declared criminals by their state government because of their ethnicity.

You expect "calm and reasonable" protests to that?

Does the term "white privilege" mean anything to you? What you're looking at here is the result of something that you will, in all likelihoods given DU's demographics, never have to worry about. It's very nice that you can sit at home and cast judgment on these people for having the audacity, the temerity, the uppityness to be fucking pissed about the laws that are now targeting them.

Is violence a good thing? No. But you can't really expect anything else when this much bullshit is thrown into people's faces, and then some dumbfuck decides to rub it in a little more. The stupid fucker getting chased knew exactly what the results of his fucking idiotic action would be. He's lucky that all he got was some garbage thrown at him.

Throw in Gandhi, while you're at it. Seriously. Now before I go further, I want to point out I have nothing but admiration for these two men. They had their flaws and all, but what they did and what they said is worthy of respect.

But they ain't shit without a few million angry motherfuckers behind them.

That's the key. That's what's constantly ignored. Gandhi and King... neither one of them would have accomplished anything if it weren't for the very real threat being posed by the people standing behind them. Both of these men were basically saying to the establishment, "We can do this my way, the peaceful way... or I can just step aside and let all these nice people with torches and pitchforks figure out how to handle the situation."

King and Gandhi earned their place in history in large part by keeping lots of brown people from actually revolting against the established hierarchy, just like how chief Joseph is only remembered for having the good taste to surrender unconditionally. It's the Little Brown Hero myth, very popular with liberals, even if most of them are unaware of its origins or meanings.

This does nothing to support your claim that we can't expect anything else. We certainly can and did with King. He was successful.

Your either/or assertion is evidence of a ridiculous lack of understanding. King and his followers understood that peaceful protest persuaded better. That angry and violent protest were more likely to entrench opposition and promote stereotypes. They knew they would be the sympathetic group to the rest of the nation when the dogs, firehoses, and batons were turned on them.

Even if I were to grant your assertion that there was an either/or scenario. You still need to exhaust the first, peaceful, option before the or.

As for your comment about pre-written guidelines, King and his fellow organizers were the ones that issued their own guidelines to the protesters. They were all asked to sign a pledge of nonviolence in order to march.
