Obama slams Arizona immigration bill as 'misguided' attempt to 'undermine basic notions of fairness'
By David Neiwert Friday Apr 23, 2010 11:00am

http://crooksandliars.com/david-neiwert/obama-slams-arizona-immigration-bill

President Obama this morning took a clear stance against that crackpot immigration bill passed by Republicans in Arizona, and now awaiting the governor's signature:

Our failure to act responsibly at the federal level will only open the door to irresponsibility by others. That includes, for example, the recent efforts in Arizona, which threaten to undermine basic notions of fairness that we cherish as Americans, as well as the trust between police and their communities that is so crucial to keeping us safe.

In fact, I've instructed members of my administration to closely monitor the situation and examine the civil rights and other implications of this legislation. But if we continue to fail to act at the federal level, we will continue to see misguided efforts opening up around the country.

1. So what's he doing to DO about it?
There's no question that it's unconstitutional. The time to take action on the Federal level is NOW!!!

9. He is reducing tariffs on capital letters, exclamation points, and pugnacious language

...or, maybe thinking about having the DoJ take a look at this thing which has not resulted in a single arrest yet, so that they will be prepared to act when that happens.

It's not as flashing as launching nukes at Phoenix, I know.

However, you can't "take action" against a law that hasn't been applied against anyone. You do know how this works, yes?

2. Misguided...that's all? just Misguided? And Limbaugh et al are "problematic?"
for god's sake, Mr President...just FUCKING SAY IT. It's a blatant assault on basic American freedoms. And these hate merchants on the radio are not "problematic" , they're racist, hate-mongering demagogues. JUST SAY IT.Not just President Obama, but the entire oh so meek and polite "leadership " of the Democratic Party. Will they ever finally forcefully stand up to this shit? ( my personal answer: ain't holding my breath) ..Coincidentally I just was reading the Nazis' "enabling " laws today...Those were also ,I guess, just problematical and misguided...I'm an admirer of some things Mr.Obama has done but I'm so fucking sick of the fear of just telling it like it is.
And yes,I understand that as President, Mr.Obama has to choose his words carefully, but every act of appearing like a wimp in front of a bully just encourages more of the same, and worse. I've never heard of anyone ever stopping a mugging with a civilized, polite, admonition to the mugger that that perhaps his actions are problematic and misguided...We're being mugged more and more every day by these bastards, and all we can do is politely suggest that maybe that's not very nice?

6. Yes, exactly! You hit the nail on the head. Anyone
with an ounce of intelligence realizes this, but unfortunately Democrats in office don't have much spine to tell it like it is.

5. Nope...not to my knowledge
The only part of the voting constituency that this would make happy is the group that isn't planning on voting for him anyway. And, it might anger others by drawing too much attention to an already untenable situation. Very few people supporting the president want to talk about the violence in Arizona. That's a non starter.

If he starts commenting on the atrocities committed. He'll own it. And, be forced to deal with it. He doesn't mind owning the high ground that this unfortunate bill provides. But, he doesn't "really" want to be known as the border security president. That's a republican talking point. He won't keep the White House heading down that road.

He knows...if he makes this large and very vocal voting block happy, he'll stand a chance of getting re-elected. And, for every politician, even a president I love, it's about getting re-elected. Everything else takes a back seat to that primary agenda.

It's fairly safe to condemn this bill. It's almost a gift. It's a stinker. But, you couldn't have asked for a better photo op. A smart, intellectual constiutitional law professor, now President defending civil rights. He's avoided really heading down that path with the African American and the LGBT communities. That could be touchy. But, this one is sure and safe with a group with a lot of clout and democratic support.

Arizona needs a lifeline. This bill won't help the state, though. I guess they think they have to try something.

As long as drugs and cheap labor are the order of the day...the kidnappings, murders, etc. will continue. Funny, there is always a fat cat somewhere out there benefiting on the distress of others.

The people profiting from these tragedies aren't the least bit affected negatively by border issues.

right now by a federal grand jury related to civil and criminal investigations regarding human rights violations.
