I live in the most fascist part of the US...A whole world away from you! 45 min south of Atlanta, Ga.

I had a spinal cord injury in 2003 that left me with all the familiar symptoms one would expect from a SCI...However, I was also left with this horrible pain down my entire left side into my privates. I played soccer for my entire life so I was used to pain from broken bones to tearing my ACL/MCL in my knee & the very painful rehab that follows. NOTHING could have prepared me for the Neuropathic Pain from a SCI! This pain is not the type of pain one lives with without something to help knock the edge off...Finding that "something" is extremely hard & can be very expensive! Normal pain medicine is not designed for Neuropathic Pain.

Well, I was & still am under the care of some of the best doctors in the world when it comes to SCI (Shepherd Center Hospital & Rehab for Spinal Cord & Brain Injuries in Atl, Ga.)...About a year after my injury as this pain began to consume me I was put into the pain management program that had me trying all sorts of possible meds/therapies in hopes of finding some relief. The cost began to rise and my insurance company dropped me at about one year into my nightmare! So, now I had no choice as I was beginning to think about doing the unthinkable! With the help of some very brave family & friends that were able to get their hands on some Cannabis I found some relief! So, we decided to invest in a set-up to grow some clean, high quality Cannabis so that no one had to go out on the streets...However, I live in the most fascist part of the country, the deep south, where there is no sympathy for the suffering! This is Christian country where suffering is considered a gift from god! So, the paranoia of getting caught was growing to the point I could no longer allow myself to be responsible for getting family & friends in deep deep trouble on my behalf. At about the same time my doctors told me that there was a drug on the market that had recently been approved for use in Neuropathic Pain from SCI. I tried it and it did help take the edge off enough that I decided to try it for a while and stop growing Cannabis...This is where I am today!

The medicine is more expensive than growing Cannabis & has many more side effects...But I really don't have a choice considering where I live.

So, I watch what is happening in California & other states with the hopes of one day being able to move.

6. It's a very big effort in Cali, but the impact will be national.

Just like in CO and other states, the people are moving forward. We have some great links on the site to advocate groups like ASA and NORML. It's funny, but this issue, more than anything I've lobbied for in my life, can really be a local issue. In my city and county we've been fighting for an ordinance for safe and fair dispensaries and after more than six months of work we're almost there.

A couple of brave souls have opened without real permission, or a proper business licence and that's made it even tougher to get the real work done. However, this Thursday the planning commission will pass along an ordinance regulating and zoning local medical cannabis dispensaries to the city council and I'm proud to say that I helped write that ordnance, with the help of many other local activists. Medical cannabis has been legal in Ca since 96 and we're finally getting in Stockton, what cities all over Ca have had for years, and local activists have made it happen.

Don't give up. Continue the fight. I do hope the stuff big pharma pushes on you helps and maybe one day you can make it out to Ca and we'll gladly welcome you into the light, or you can fight to change things at home until it finally happens. Either way, we will move forward to end cannabis bigotry once and for all in America.

I am so happy for you and the work you are doing...Like you said and I can see, if y'all do it right and Cannabis is legalized & regulated in a responsible way the tax revenue will convince many other states to follow! I think. Money talks!

I share the anger of BIG Pharma but I have to admit they do do a lot of good as well...I think we all lose perspective sometimes due to the way BIG Pharma acts. I know some will die before they admit BIG Pharma does anything good but I know I am living in the trenches. Having said that, I know BIG Pharma does not want to see Cannabis legalized!

I have a short story about how Health Care Reform has already helped me...The medicine that I take for my Neuropathic pain is really expensive! Well, many of the BIG Pharma Companies had these "so-called" plans for people in my position who are completely disabled & can't afford their meds...Well, the plans were basically for show before the HCR debate started because when you read the fine print basically no one would qualify...Well, I have no idea if it had anything to do with Obama's secret deal with BIG Pharma or simply the spotlight was now on these companies once the debate started but they changed their policy! The company that makes my med changed their policy and accepted my application after twice denying me! Now they send me my meds every 3 months in the mail FREE OF CHARGE! This change happened June of 2009 so it obviously had something to do with the debate or Obama's deal with BIG Pharma...So, either way I just want folks to know some people really are benefiting from the mess. I know it allowed me to be able to continue taking my medicine at the doses my doctors want & allowed me to keep my house! I have no choice but to be thankful for Obama doing what he did even if it was not exactly what WE ALL really wanted.
