4. You're welcome! I really believe that the kids of today
will change the world. My boys simply can't believe that there are old people who care if someone is gay or a different skin color, they just do not understand it. We may not have stopped war and corporatism yet, but we did raise great kids!

18. The real difference is that we were taught both overtly and
covertly by our parents and society to believe these things. Responsible parents had to make it part of their children's education to say these ideas were wrong. Now it seems the bigots are the ones having to ram their wrong ideas down their children's throats.

21. were taught both overtly and covertly by our parents and society
Well, it has been shown that parents and home life have negligible effect on these things. The environment out side the home has an almost 50% influence ( the other is genes).... think of immigrants who's kids grow up without any accent their parents may have but end up with the accent of their adopted country.

This of course does not mean parents have no effect on kids behavior, it's just the environment outside the home has a far greater effect.... and the kids themselves effect the parents' behavior more than the other way around. Parents are also effected by the outside environment.

So kudos to the environment we all have created!

26. Not sure why they were at this school but they are protesting high school plays
They were here in November protesting at our neighborhood high school because they were putting on RENT. It was awesome, the kids organized a huge protest and the TV news aired only pictures of the high school kids, none of the Phelps group. Loved it!

35. why Gunn...?
One thing that's been suggested is that Gunn came to their attention because there was a cluster of suicides there a while ago, which made the news.

I bet this event at the school has probably reduced the likelihood of more kids feeling suicidal. When you feel like you're part of a positive and purposeful community that does something you can be proud of, you're probably going to feel more like life is something you can handle.

While I might be tempted to go into them with same nasty spirit they show...I would hold back, keeping an even temper and laugh at them...take their perception of "power" away...they are evil personified.

13. Education
is the way to a knowing soceity. Without education we'd all become ignorant teabaggers. That is why the right wing would love to pull the funding rug of education out form under us all. Privatizing schools would be a way for the righties to do that or at least start to do that. Thank God there are educators that are out there, like at Gunn, with this understanding in mind. Go Gunn...

19. I agree we have to protect education from being controlled
by those who only want to educate what they believe. Gunn school is a wonderful example of kids who have been raised by openminded parents and the teachers who have not been told what to teach or believe. There our still many area's where parents try and conrol their schools and what their students are allowed to learn so the kids are still anti-tolerant because of this. I feel sorry for the kids who are not taught tolerance because if they ever decide to leave their small world they won't understand what is going on in the big world when everyone else around them is tolerant. Thanks for this wonderful tape...I need to see that the youth are learning tolerance because they aren't being taught that where I live.

44. Wake County NC was recently completely overrun
by fundies -

They are doing away with the system that best "integrated" students. It was based on income - NOT RACE, and was a great model for ensuring equity. They also have a lot of magnets (not sure what will happen to those...)

It'll be interesting to see what happens there. Charter public schools and homeschooling are popular options already.

the hate of the Phelps clan. They must have been very disappointed that people weren't yelling at them and condemning them. Completely defused the situation and took away any power that WBC wanted to exert.

24. Great job!
This was a great idea. I found it interesting that the songs being sung (at least the ones in the vid) were all 60's songs. The music is still changing the world.

Suggestion: If those nutjobs show up at another school and there is a similar Love Demonstration, have a really big sign (like the one held by numerous students in this one) read: "We will pray the hatred that satan has filled you with leaves you!" That'll really rile them up!

32. Gunn High class of '77 - go Titans!
Edited on Thu Apr-01-10 02:15 PM by paulkienitz
This was a high-class school back in the day (before Prop 13 cuts)... my class included a number of people who ended up becoming big brains in the Silicon Valley boom.

Westboro definitely stepped into the deep end of the liberal intellectual secular humanist queer-loving pool here.

I think I have more school spirit today than I ever did while attending. Scarlet and black!

36. always a third choice . . .
Homeschooling . . . we raised a wonderful, loving, kind young man due to being able to home school him. We aren't religious "nuts" as some people think all homeschoolers are, we just wanted our son to be in a safe environment, which his public school wasn't.

You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye.

You have a lumber yard in your eye Mr. Phelps - it is called hatred and it has made you blind.
