Interesting take on the coverage of Weir from Current TV.

1. I wish I could have roomed with Tanith Belbin.
Got to give Johnny props on that. I like him very much, but I like Tanith better.

5. No problemo. I made my "decision" in first grade.
My teacher's calves and legs, in high heels. Amazingly, my Dad left the family, and yet I was and have been a raging heterosexual (not so much anymore, as I push 60). Anyway, we are who we are. And we deserve all our rights and respect, whoever we are. I'm on your side, and will push for your rights. Period.

14. Not a problem FK,
I just didn't get the huge picture of the pretty girl after watching the video. A raging, how about flaming heterosexual? ha ha! I like that. I'm glad we're on the same side.

About me: I was raised a Roman Catholic, had a great dad as a role model, and identified as a man with my brothers, in other words I did not act in a way that one would consider feminine. I fully realized I was gay at the somewhat later age of 22, after years of denial, a compartmentalized sexuality, and deep self-hatred. So I was not a raging, rather a timorous and faint-hearted homosexual.

This is what I like about Johnny Weir: growing up in the 70's-80's, there were no gay role models that would reach a teen's world in the suburbs of Orange County. Johnny's forcing us to see that it's okay to be a gay, very graceful, competitive athlete who can be feminine if he desires to be. Maybe one less young person will contemplate--as I did--or commit suicide knowing that there is a fierce, successful gay man out there. I'm glad this is getting talked about in society and the youth will take note. The whole world is watching the Olympics.

********

C'mon!

Of course they weren't billed as gay. But ...like I said... c'mon!

And all their songs sound the same.

You shoulda tried the 50-60's for growing up alone. Hell, gay people didn't even "exist" then! (You were straight with a problem) By the late 70's it was almost alright to be gay! Almost. Then AIDS set things back hugely, and the rise of conservatism and the Religious Right tried to put it all back in the bottle but they couldn't. And, like you, I was thinking the other night how amazing it is that a high school student can be openly gay these days and not be sent to the Psychiatrist!

Uber-straight and guilty religious nuts still hate to see us happy (as this little film shows us) in any way, though. (or anyone happy really)

9. I like the change back to this subject, big time! lol, but so you know, FK is a very strong advocate
for our rights. I think they're merely saying who they found attractive, nothing wrong with that. ;)

welcome to DU!

(Johnny's so cute!!!!)

...and I agree with you. I just wanted to get back to the sexy beast...er, who has many other fine qualities, among them his ability to skate.

Yes, it's hard to look away from him. I'm not entirely convinced of the concept that vociferous homophobes are closeted gays/lesbians; however, in the curious case of Johnny Weir, I think his smoldering beauty actually torments and provokes some of his detractors. Sort of smokes them out. Just a thought.

2. I found this article interesting as well
Skater Johnny Weir Verbally Attacked By Gay Commentator On National Television

It's not uncommon to see a gay man exhibit blatant homophobia, especially one who desperately needs attention; but even so, I was shocked and appalled by the video of former figure skater and out television personality and commentator Mark Lund ripping three-time National Champion Johnny Weir a new one. So now, I will do the same to him.

A recent special aired on which Mark Lund, Nancy Kerrigan (yes, go on and roll your eyes - I did too), and Lou Tilley weighed in on the upcoming U.S. Figure Skating National Championship, and decided to compare young up and comers Evan Lysacek and Johnny Weir. Throughout the program, Lund repeatedly and vehemently criticized Johnny for being flamboyantly gay - except without really saying those exact words.

http://blogcritics.org/culture/article/skater-johnny-weir-verbally-attacked-by/

Everyone - including this commentator, who is himself gay - appears to have lost their fucking mind where Johnny Weir is concerned. I believe Lund crossed a line and should be fired.

6. So, J. Weir Is Gay! So WHAT!!! Anyone See Pleshenko (sp) Throwing Kisses
to the judges? Who cares? Not me, and he can REALLY, REALLY skate well!

I only wish he would lay off the "animal" fur... which he did!

I say, go away and SHUT-UP!! People in glass houses! Pleah!

7. His talent is clear.. He is flamboyant.... so what?
Edited on Sun Feb-28-10 08:01 PM by hlthe2b
Why is flamboyant considered to be a slur? There are plenty of flamboyant athletes in all kinds of sports--independent of sexual orientation...

But I can't defend him on the fur, either. Wearing animal fur in this day and age tells me something very negative about that individual. I give no one a pass for this.

17. Oh... Just Wanted To Add Something To This Thread... For Anyone Who
it may interest. I'm a white female who's been married for to the same man since FOREVER! Have some very very good Gay & Lesbian friends who would probably take one for me. Just wanted to say that my defense of Johnny is purely because I like the guy, and I think he really has "cohones!" If that is something I can say without offending anyone!

If he wants to push the issue... You, Go JOHNNY! Or Nickie as I think that's his nick-name!

8. WOH!!!! That's hard hittingly sarcastic towards the end - I love it! Slamming people for constantly
saying Johnny is this this this this - laughing at him on air, even by the NBC crew, but not pointing out he's a 3 time national champion!

What??? He's won something? I thought he was just a flamboyant pretty boy? You mean he's actually...... (swallow) athletic?!

love it!

10. Clear double-standards due to prejudices... no, bigotry.
For god's sake- the man has talent! He should be admired and appreciated for excelling at a sport and dance that very, very few can do. Those sportscasters ought to show humility given that they're talent is simply talking. But apparently despite their daily workout in front of a camera with a microphone, they still can't help making asses of themselves. That's equivalent to falling on the ice for a skater. Judges' score is going to be very low.

16. I love this guy! Sports people don't consider female figure skating a sport either
Not because it isn't athletic. It's because girls are doing it in a girly way. Jeez! You compete in pink or firs and it's like you have no muscles.

I love Johnny Weir!

21. And like......I don't care one friggin' bit!
I am not gay..but I have no problem with it. Many of my best and most sincere friends have been gay. I appreciate, and even envy their artistic ability in many, many cases.

Hey....if my son or daughter was not hetero...I'd be OK with it. Now I'm a grandpa, and if my grandsons are gay....it's fine with me. Just leave them alone with their sexuality..the same as you would like to be left alone with yours.

This world is so f*cked up in so many ways. Just live and let live. The gays I've met in my 62 years of life have mostly be just a cross section of society. I've met a few idiots, a few mean SOB's...but the majority have been wonderful, caring individuals. Just like the straight folks I've met and been associated with.

Live and let live fellow-human-being. We are no better!!
