The mainstream media has been giving Evan Bayh a big fat sloppy wet kiss for the last 24 hours. Every single story is about how moderate and centrist and independent he is. Golly gee willikers, Evan Bayh is such a pure and innocent person and he just couldn't take the corruption of Congress anymore. He was so fed up with the partisanship and like any great man decided he must strike out on his own and leave DC.

Come on, are these people this naïve or do they have a stake in this? Do you really think Evan Bayh only has pure motivations and was the last good man in Washington? This is absolutely absurd, and on many fronts it's the exact opposite of the truth. No one made a deal with corporate lobbyists faster than Evan Bayh. He wasn't sick of the problems of DC, he was the problem of DC.

Bayh masked his craven capitulation to corporate lobbyists with a veneer of bipartisanship and moderation. If he sold out to enough special interests, he could claim that he was on both sides. But the one side he was never against was business interests that fed him his campaign cash.

So, he is a typical fake politician; I get that and I can live with it. What bothers me is how the media plays along. They have been running a giant ad for Evan Bayh's future political career or future lobbying career over the last couple of days. There is never a skeptical story about how Evan Bayh might be retiring to cash in on lobbyist money. And for those of you not familiar with the process -- and apparently that's the entire DC media -- the most powerful tool lobbyists have is the implied bribe that politicians get at the end of their career. If you play ball and do what you've been told, you're nearly guaranteed a multi-million dollar payoff at the end. Look at Tom Daschle, Dick Gephardt, Billy Tauzin, and Dick Armey. This list goes on and on. Everybody gets rich, oh right, except the American people.

1. Essential Information if We Will Survive as a Democracy and a Party
Edited on Wed Feb-17-10 01:52 PM by theFrankFactor
I'm not even kidding.

Our party is rotten at the top. Liberal and Progressive voices are stifled because they promote social justice and not market morality. The single greatest obstacle to cleaning this mess up is to refuse to sober up and kick ass. Give up your love affair with Barack Obama and the "party" and see reality. Look at results! Look at actions behind the scenes! Look at this realistically!

AGAIN: If Republicans had the majorities we have had and STILL have along with a President elected with such powerful grass roots inertia--THEY WOULD HAVE EVERY FUCKING THING THEIR LITTLE SHRIVELED HEARTS DESIRED!

Democrats are designed to fail by leaders of the party! Blue Dogs are an insurance policy for corporate domination. Look where the money goes. Look at committee heads. Look at cabinet selections. Look at the MA. election and the Democratic candidate. We are going to start hemorrhaging Democrats like crazy and NOT BECAUSE THEY ARE TOO LIBERAL! BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT LIBERAL ENOUGH. IT IS RIGHT UNDER OUR NOSES!

Look at the Democratic responses to the abominable actions of the Bush Administration! CRICKETS! It is a mutually assured submission to corporate domination. It is a SHAM! Stop using piecemeal concessions as evidence of loyalty by our party to REAL Progressive and Liberal achievements! Stop sucking on the pacifier.

This has to happen OUT HERE, with people like Cenk helping to open our eyes and with people like us here at DU to continue to do so. The movement can not rely on support from corporate entities of any kind. It is an essential paradigm shift!

PS For the party sensitive: This is not a condemnation of the Democratic Party as an entity but the leadership within. This is THE party through which to clean up this mess but it is infested with corporate scum and they're not going to remove themselves. WE have to do it.

7. This is part of why I have a qualified respect for Ron Paul.
He's a maniac of the extreme right, and I wouldn't vote for him for dog catcher, but at least he's not a bought man, or someone angling for a sinecure on a coporate board when he retires (that is, a bought man with payment due).

k & r

10. Nailed it again, Cenk!
The American people are ready to know this. People are fed fucking up. Many, like life long Republicans and Tea Baggers, don't understand the source of the country's problems but they are so fed up they might be ready to listen to Cenk's reasoning. Because it's right there for all to see.
