MSNBC Countdown w/ KEITH OLBERMANN - 4 January 2009: The GOP are now exploiting an attack attempt for political gain and on 'Meet The Press,' John Brennan calls out Dick Cheney.

BRENNAN (VIDEO): "I'm very disappointed in the the Vice President's comments... What they're doing is just playing into al Qaeda's strategic effort, which is to get us to battle among ourselves instead of focusing on them."

- snip -

WOLFFE: "The question here is why didn't the centralized system of intelligence that was set up after 9/11 work? Is this conspiracy or cock-up?

- snip -

OLBERMANN: "To your second point there... you suggested in there that the administration is looking into mixed, perhaps, mixed motives, mixed or misplaced priorities - I'm not sure exactly how you phrase that - in terms of, what, getting messages from A to B? Are people thought to have been deliberately withholding information so that the dots could not be connected?"

WOLFFE: "Right, the question is: Was this information that was shared? Remember, there was some sharing of information, but it involves the father of this, in the end, terrorist, who walks into see the CIA officials in a foreign embassy, this is an American embassy in a foreign country, and, you know, that information - was it shared fully; why wasn't it shared fully? The question there is again: Cock-up or conspiracy? Was there a reason these agencies were at war with each other that prevented this intelligence from being shared?"

OLBERMANN: "Is the implication there that there is at least the possibility that somebody understood how serious this could be, and yet withheld information to make some other part of the counter-terrorism system look bad?"

WOLFFE: "That has got to be an area that the White House is looking into, and, you know, motives can be hard to assess, because it's not clear that this person was easily indentified as a terrorist..."

OLBERMANN: "Well, certainly, not to get too far ahead of what the information, the White House doesn't have, and presumably, thus, you don't have, and certainly I don't have, but that seems to me, that what you're describing, at least in theory, is a far greater threat than a guy with explosives on an airplane, whether or not he succeeds in blowing them up."

WOLFFE: "Well, it's the most important line of defense. I don't know that it's a threat in itself, but you can defend every airport as much as you like; in the end, the most efficient, safest borderline for security has got to be human intelligence. There seems to have been plenty of human intelligence in this case."

4. There were early passenger eye witness reports that didn't jive
with the official story. I'll say it again, there's alot more to this story and it wouldn't surprise me
one bit if Cheney and his operatives were behind it.

10. In all fairness, they are talking about using HUMINT
or human intelligence. (The father walking into Embassy X and wanting to talk to the CIA officers supposedly stationed there.)

HUMINT such as in that example is about as reliable as that of the National Enquirers reporting.

Review of the intel community is never a bad thing.

16. Exactly. And I'll bet Obama himself knows what happened here,
and with 9-11. Until we get our collective heads out of our azz, we will continue to be taken over. And getting our heads out of our azz may mean violence, which progressives are not wont to due, which is sad because only progressives are smart enough to figure something out.

17. A real good example of why Obama needs the left
Who else would defend him from dirty tricks from the right?

He really doesn't want us completely convinced that he has an R agenda, whether or not he realizes it now.

22. Like the way the left defended Carter?
Seems I've seen this movie before. The same dirty tricks and the same personal assassination. Even here, I still see comments of people that bought into the smear that says Carter was not a very good president.

Does anybody doubt that the right made a deal with Iran before the election in 1980?

Does anybody doubt that the media was complicit in the smears against Carter?

Does anybody doubt that the media was complicit in the smears against Clinton?

Progressives on the whole have gotten a lot more savvy since 1979. If we'd had the Internet, the inside info on that would likely have spread fast enough to derail it, IMO.

The left in DU were the first to say that something seemed wrong about the Nigerian getting on the plane despite his father warning a CIA officer in the U.S. embassy about him. And were laughed at.

Of course if you think Obama can do just fine tossing over half of his party away simply b/c progressives in 1979 didn't like Brzezinski, you must know something I don't.

18. Terrorism murders and a Democratic Administration
Is a definite "win-win" for DICK and company.

Yea, the Republicans will "keep us safe". They will allow as much murder and misery as possible to keep us terrified, but safe? Safe is for sissys.

Sick fuckers, I don't doubt for a MINUTE that Cheney left moles in strategic places to do what they could to keep terrorism working.

27. Everybody is letting what Hayden said go unchallenged
paraphrasing, he said;

"We fucked up. We let a couple of prisoners go and they RETURNED TO THE BATTLEFIELD, returned to practicing terrorism."

I think these particular individuals WERE NOT CAPTURED ON THE FUCKING BATTLEFIELD. I think they were picked up during the early stages of Afghanistan so that some Afgans could reap the magnificent BOUNTY the Bush admin put on the heads of any captured "terrorists"

So I think these two were some of the most unluckiest bastards on the planet that were in the wrong place at the wrong time and their betrayal so their friends could run off with tens of thousands of American dollars had nothing to do with any terrorist acts they in all probability didn't even THINK to commit at the time.

THEY LEARNED ALL THEIR TERRORISM from their time in Guantanamo. The USA turned them into terrorists by holding them at Gitmo without an legal recourse for five or so years.

If I got kidnapped and imprisoned unjustly for five FUCKING YEARS, if I ever got out, terrorizing my former captors might be pretty high up on my TO DO list, too!

THE USA TURNED THESE PEOPLE INTO TERRORISTS! They have to have been so utterly and completely innocent for Bush/Cheney to have released them in the first place. I'm pretty sure Bush/Cheney wouldn't have released anybody that had any shred of terrorist credentials.

Hayden spun this up like a dynamo and nobody in this clip called him on it!

-90% Jimmy

I'm relying on my memory on this. Could somebody confirm or refute my take on? These guys were absolutely not terrorists before their arrests, correct? I just can't see them being released under any circumstances if they were associated in any way with terrorism before their arrests.

28. Rachel last night
She also mentioned that Obama was going to have a meeting about this in the White House today. Kinda like he actually wants to find out where the intelligence failure was and punish those responsible.

I hope this investigation ultimately leads to a Cheney perp walk, as his fingerprints are all over this.

As long as bush loyalists are working in intelligence, America is at risk.
