I have been seeing a number of these cases of late, reported in the MSM.
So perhaps Bill Maher and his over-the-top anti-vaccine crusade are on to something.
I sure won't be getting any flu shots anytime soon after watching this.

... in which a medic commented that this might be a misdiagnosis?

3. Yes. I am a nurse here's the info, and NOT a cheerleader but an "ambassador"...

Found link. Neurologists at some U of Maryland are using her case to teach about psychogenic dystonia.

Link to video (yes, via fox, but original story broke there also) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jP0QYLMUZb4&feature=youtube_gdata

Link to article:
http://www.examiner.com/x-13791-Baltimore-Disease-Prevention-Examiner~y2009m10d16-Woman-claiming-she-acquired-dystonia-from-a-flu-shot-may-have-it-all-in-her-head
Video of a former NFL cheerleader who allegedly acquired dystonia from a flu vaccine has been making the rounds lately all over the media and online. The woman, Desiree Jennings, states in her interviews that she acquired the flu from a flu vaccine she received ten days earlier and then the symptoms of dystonia began showing.

On the October 16, 2009, Fox News show, "The O'Reilly Factor", Dr. Leigh Vinocur from the University of Maryland Medical System offered an alternative cause to Ms. Jennings' syndrome. Dr. Vinocur stated that there have been no cases of dystonia associated with the flu vaccine and that neurology experts at the University of Maryland were using Ms. Jennings' case to teach neurology residents about psychogenic dystonia.

Dystonia is a neurological disorder where twitches and other repetitive, involuntary reactions occur. Normally, these repetitive actions do not let up. In the interview videos, Ms. Jennings' symptoms subside at times. According to Dr. Vinocur, neurologists saw the video and were convinced it was psychogenic.

Psychogenic disorders do not mean that a person is faking their symptoms. Rather, it means that the person truly believes that the symptoms are real. However, there is no physiological reason for the symptoms. It truly is all in their head. Examples include phantom limb syndrome, where a hand that has been amputated along with a limb is felt by the person as being clinched or still being there. Psychotherapy or some medications to treat the mental issues can help deal with psychogenic disorders.

Another important detail in Ms. Jennings' story is that she acquired flu from the flu vaccine. This is a scientific impossiblity. The flu virus in the injected vaccine is dead, inactive. In the solution being injected, the virus has no cells in which to live and reproduce. Viruses are, by definition, obligate intracellular parasites. They need cells to live, grow, and reproduce. There has been no recorded case of acquired flu from the flu shot vaccine. Likewise, if true, Ms. Jennings would be the first case of dystonia as a result of the flu vaccine. Furthermore, the Food and Drug Administration did not find anything wrong or different about the lot of vaccine used.

Someone else posted link showing she wasn't even a cheerleader but an "ambassador", hoping some day to be a cheerleader.

5. Well, she's still a cheerleader; just not employed as one yet.
It's still a heartbreaking condition, regardless of whether it's the flu vaccine that caused it.

6. Bad things happen to people, and sometimes they happen after a flu shot ....
.... it in no way implicates the flu shot as the cause. When millions of people are getting flu shots some people will have unusual events occur the next day. It can't be otherwise. When millions are getting flu shots, some will be dead the next day. Coincidence. Some will buy a winning lottery ticket the next day. Coincidence.

16. Not when it comes to establishing cause and effect there's not.
You can die or become crippled any day and that's independent of whether you got a flu shot, or walked under a ladder, or stepped of a crack, the day before.

If you want to make flu shots look bad it's very easy since millions are getting them. Some are going to have bad things happen to them the next day - guaranteed

13. Those are ordinary events
for a healthy young woman to suddenly become almost totally disabled and incapacitated for no apparent reason is not an ordinary event. we may never know if her flu shot was truly the culprit or not, but personally I won't be taking any chances, so you can't say if it was purely chance. knowing some of the highly questionable ingredients that are in the new swine flu vaccine, I wouldn't be surprised if there was a correlation.

15. It happens. People are healthy one day and have a disease the next day ....
... It can happen before a flu shot and it can happen after a flu shot.

22. Her Doctors implicated the flu shot.
However, I have to say I'm skeptical of the vaccination being linked to her particular condition. That said, the matter should be studied to the best of our ability.

25. My understanding is that the have suggested that the flu shot may
have triggered a condition that she already had. But that there's been no determination of an actual cause.

28. The story simply stated that the flu shot
was the factor in her disorder.

The issue with vaccines being a related factor in XYZ, is always "triggered an underlying vulnerability" it matters not. No vaccine, no condition is the bottom line.

Again, I'm doubtful in this case regardless.

17. I see that someone here has an agenda to spread fear through
Edited on Wed Oct-21-09 02:54 PM by robo50
anecdotal information. Someone here seems to have never studied probability and statistics, nor have an appreciation of the scientific method of research.

So someone here tries to scare the cr** out of us over mercury and other known chemical elements, and how much the drug and physician and nursing industry would just LOVE exposing us ALL to more risk and misery, (trained scientists that they are), with more poison.

Geeze, isn't there another website that is for those that are so afraid of science?

Somthing about "flat earth" I think.

20. More than anecdotal
what do I have to gain from posting a video from youtube? the drug companies are the ones making money from the sale of this vaccine, so their agenda is pretty clear. speaking of statistics, here's one, or two for you.

Nearly 200,000 Americans die every year from hospital errors
www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/hospital_errors.html

60% of British doctors say no to swine flu vaccine (Aug 2009)
www.healthcarerepublic.com/news/935745/Exclusive-GPs-may-reject-swine-flu-vaccine/

how many people in the US have ever died from swine flu? maybe a hundred? if that? so 200,000 vs 100 deaths, what do you think is a more serious threat? so maybe the medical industry should consider cleaning up their own act before they start crying wolf about a statistically insignificant threat, no?

27. +1
Vague symptoms with possible causes not related to the vaccine, along with the fact that no other cases specifically like this having been reported - her condition is probably unrelated.
