1. Catholic and live in Maine?

The bishop of Portland is spending money that you might put into the regular collection to fund (with in kind contributions, i.e., staff time )the battle against marriage equality. The Church considers marriage a sacrament and its institutional leaders have the right to decide who they will marry. It has no right to impose sacramental norms on civil contracts for people of any faith or no faith. In fact, if Catholics are married outside the Church, the marriage is not even considered to be valid!

Catholics in Maine contributed an underwhelming $40,000 in a special collection to fund the bishop's campaign. This is hardly an expression of support.

The bishop gets about $5,300,000 annually by taxing weekly parish collections and the annual bishop's appeal. The current budget for communications and public policy is $471,000 -- about 10% of the annual budget.

Cut your Sunday contribution by 10% and give $0 to the annual bishop's appeal . This is the only institutional power we the members of the Church have. Send that money to some Catholic charity that the bishop has no power to tax.
