I wish it was simple cowardice. Then we could recommend that the good people of Pennsylvania and Michigan just toss these goniffs. But it's a lot more complicated. Sadly, a large number of Americans (some times it seems like a majority, although I'm far from sure that's true) just can't handle the prospect of same-sex relationships. As politicians in states with large older and more conservative voters -- including conservadem voters -- Stebenow and Casey are being cagey.

We elect our politicians on emotions as much as on rational assessment of their policies. This issue is very emotional for people on both sides of the issue, and Casey and Stebenow don't want to blight their careers.

Is that very satisfactory? Hell no. But the political and social processes are moving the right direction, and as long as good people keep pushing, the laws will change.
